This book highlights the very latest research output of several EU satellite-related projects and addresses many unresolved issues in next-generation satellite systems, such as efficient deployment of IPv6 over satellites, working with WLAN and WiMax, QoS provisioning over multi-segment networks (including satellite networks), multicast networks and security.

About the Author

Dr. Linghang Fan is a research fellow of the Centre for Communication Systems Research in the University of Surrey, UK. He received his B. Eng. in Automatic Control from Southeast University, China, and his M. S. and Ph. D. in Telecommunications from the University of Bradford, UK. From 1998 to 2000, he was a researcher at the University of Bradford and worked on EU projects SINUS and SUMO. In 2003, he joined the University of Surrey and worked on EU projects STRIKE, Ambient Networks, MAESTRO and SATNEX. Currently, he is working on the EU projects SATSIX and ECGIN. He has published more than forty papers in international journals and conferences. His research interests include mobile/wireless communications, mobile Internet, and communication networking.

Dr. Haitham Cruickshank is a lecturer at the University of Surrey. He has worked there since January of 1996 on several European research projects in the ACTS, ESPRIT, TEN-TELECOM, and IST programs. His main research interests are network security, satellite network architectures, VoIP, and IP conferencing over satellites. He also teaches Data and Internet Networking and Satellite Communication courses at the University of Surrey. He is a member of the Satellite and Space Communications Committee of the IEEE ComSoc and a chartered engineer and corporate member of the IEEE in UK. He is an active member of the IETF and ETSI BSM working group in the security area.

Professor Zhili Sun is the Chair of Communication Networking in the Centre for Communication Systems Research, Department of Electronic Engineering, University of Surrey, UK. He received his B. S. in Mathematics from Nanjing University in China and Ph. D. in Computing Science from Lancaster University, UK. He was a Postdoctoral Researcher, from 1989 to 1993, in the Telecommunications Group, Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London before coming to Surrey. He has been a principal investigator and technical coordinator in many European projects including the ESPRIT BISANTE, VIP-TEN, GEOCAST, ICEBERGS, SatLife, SATSIX, and Euro-NGI projects. He has also been a principal investigator in UK EPSRC, the European Space Agency (ESA) and industrial projects on IP multicast security. He has supervised many Ph. D. and research fellows. He published a book entitled Satellite Networking: Principles and Protocols (Wiley, 2005) and over 120 papers in International journals and conferences. He has also been a member of technical committees for international conferences and a member of reviewers for EU and UK research proposals.

About the Author
Dr. Michael D. Johnson earned his B.S. degree in Zoology from Washington State University and then moved East to earn a Ph.D. in physiology from The University of Michigan. After completing a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Harvard Medical School he joined the faculty of West Virginia University, where he remained for most of his career.

In 2008 Dr. Johnson moved to Qatar, on the Arabian Peninsula, to take the position of Associate Dean for Premedical Education at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar. In his new position he directs the premedical education of students from more than 30 countries.

Dr. Johnson received several teaching awards during his career, including the West Virginia University Foundation Outstanding Teacher award and the Distinguished Teacher Award of the School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Physiological Society, the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, the National Association of Biology Teachers, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

thoughts about Human Biology: Concepts and Current Issues

This is a great book. It gives a perfect amount of information, not too much, but not too little. I love the pictures and the diagrams. I have the newest edition, 3rd. It's only about 5 pages more than the 2nd edition, so if you need to save money, you won't be missing out on much if you get the 2nd edition.

I'm 36 and going back to school for a degree to start a second career and I can understand this book easily. It is absolutely insane that college bookstores would charge $132 for this book new. Good material for class, well organized, easy to follow and practical exercises. Price gouging college kids getting an education just burns me to the core. So glad I got a great price for this on Amazon.

This text is very comprehensive and goes far, far beyond what I expected a introductory human bio text to delve into. There is a free companion site for the text, as well, which is very helpful. I took biology courses several years ago in college, but I've found this book to be more well-organized than other biology texts I've encountered.

I have to say that I do and don't agree with the reader from Manhattan Beach, CA. I agree that reaching a target audience is very important in any identity system. This book, as stated, is designed not just for the art director or the designer, but for student, the entrepeneur, the marketing manager, the high level executive (i.e. CEO, CMO) Etc. According to the review, this book has achieved that goal with flying colors. I have to disagree with the rest of the review. This book's other goal was to enlighten the reader as to the process behind the final logo. To say that the range of logos in the book is average to excellent misses the whole point. It is not a ranking book like so many other logo books. Each logo was simply supposed to represent the very different processes and solutions possible. They were supposed to inspire the creative process and educate the reader (prospective client maybe) on what the process involves. If you follow the purpose of the book, they each stand on their own as excellent examples of creatively tackling the design process. In reading this book, the Philharmonic example was meant to show that although the computer is heavily used today, some ideas still rely on old solutions. In this case, there is no need to show other concepts. It would be hard to illustrate all the concepts and try to make the same point in four pages. Overall, this is a successful book on branding, identity and design.

About the Author
Margaret D. LeCompte and Judith Preissle, formerly Judith Preissle-Goetz, are, respectively, associate professor of sociology of education in the School of Education at the University of Colorado at Boulder and professor of educational anthropology in the Department of Social Science Education at the University of Georgia. Their coauthorship dates from 1977, with the presentation of their first joint paper, "Data Crunching, or, What Do I Do with the Five Drawers of Field Notes?," at the meetings of the Council on Anthropology and Education of the American Anthropological Association. Their subsequent articles have been published in the Review of Educational Research, Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, Anthropology and Education Quarterly, The American Behavioral Scientist, a number of handbooks on educational research in various disciplines, and a major text reference, Ethnography and Qualitative Design in Educational Research (New York: Academic Press, 1984). The latter work has been translated into Spanish and is slated for a second edition in 1992. Their professional activities include participation in professional associations serving sociologists, anthropologists, policymakers, and educators. Preissle served as secretary treasurer of the Council on Anthropology and Education, and LeCompte served as its president. LeCompte recently was elected secretary of Division G of the American Educational Research Association. Both are active in the Society for Applied Anthropology and the American Educational Studies Association. While much of their joint and separate authorship has been devoted to issues of research methodology, they also pursue empirical research interests. Preissle has done extensive studies on the role of schools and classrooms in the socialization of rural children to gender and other roles; like Preissle, LeCompte has had a long interest in studies of classroom interaction. In addition, she has done considerable research on school dropouts

A non-professional's view

I do not do ethnographic research, but I believe it to be just as valid as "pure science" research. This volume provides many interesting and informative concepts that maintain relevance today, some twenty-five years after its publication. Very interesting and well written.

Buy it from Britain ONLY ! (naughty publisher)

I LOVE Jill Mansell's books and have been reading them for years. As an ex-pat Brit living in the US, they were bought mainly at the airports on my way back to the US from visits home. This one I was delighted to find in my local (US) Target. NEVER AGAIN ! The US publisher has Americanised everything delightfully English; the words "panties" and "Cotswolds" were never designed to be written in the same book !!! We have no flashlights or apartments in Britain, we have torches and flats. Still, the book is wonderful, but I will be buying from across the pond in future. If I want to read about cars having hoods, I'll buy American writers :)

An author I love... but a book that was not her best

If I hadn't made myself a promise to review every book I read, I probably wouldn't have rated this one because I love Jill Mansell's books and didn't love this one. So I'll start my review with, "Go read Jill Mansell, just maybe don't start with this one!" Anyway, Making Your Mind Up (have no idea why that title, or the cover art for that matter) tells the story of Lottie, a single mom who works for a small group of cottages. It opens with her boss, Freddie, telling her he's sold the cottages because he's dying, and he enlists her help close up some unfinished business in his personal life before he dies. Enter the new owner Tyler... hunky and there's immediate sparks between Lottie and Tyler. It's typical Mansell ,and so are the side stories, which I actually liked better than the main one. Unfortunately, the light-hearted drama that Mansell usually handles so deftly is just plain silly in this book... like, really, really silly. And Lottie's two kids - who get an enormous amount of scene time - are horrid, insufferable brats, and yet I think we're supposed to like them. They take an instant dislike to Tyler, and that's the "insurmountable barrier" that keeps the lovers apart. No, there's never a scene where Lottie sits them down and says, "hey, I'm the adult here, give the guy a chance," but rather, well, I guess my kids dictate my love life! Also, I nearly threw the book across the room during a ridiculous scene with a teacher berating Lottie for allowing her children to be around a man they don't like (for silly reasons, btw)... only I have a Kindle so I wasn't about to throw that. In the book's defense, if I could plod through the silliness, there were some good storylines and likeable characters. I just wish Mansell would have toned down the slapstick. Still, I'll be first in line to read her next one.

Pure Fluff but enjoyable.

The thing I like about Mansell's book is the happy endings. And I love her characters. Lottie and Freddie are my favorites in this one. Lottie is divorced with 2 kids and she is "making her mind up" between her new boss, Tyler who her kids don't like and Seb, who her kids adore. There are sub plots in the book that keep it interesting like Freddie and his search for old friends and Cressida and her discovery of a new love. Freddie is the poster child for how to handle bad news. I adored his character. These books are fluff, but I really do enjoy them. The English setting is very intriguing.

A splendid work of impeccable scholarship

Ably Translated by Antonia Nevill and with an introduction and guide to further reading by Mark Humphries, Bertrand Lancon's Rome In Late Antiquity surveys Roman life from the third to the seventh centuries AD, from the Rome's acknowledge position as the center of Western Civilization, the greatest city in the world, and whose vast revenues supplied its huge populations with food, wine, and at least one hundred days of spectacular entertainment each year. When Pope Gregory died in Rome in 604, Rome had become a Papal power, the center of Western Christianity, the pantheon had been transformed into a church, and the city had experienced both Gothic and Vandal incursions of great violence and rapacity. Lancon's superbly presented history also covers changes in sexuality, the role of women, education, the family, calendars of games and festivals, the role of the Senate, the rise of the papacy, and more. Rome In Late Antiquity is a splendid work of impeccable scholarship that is to be commended to all academic reading lists and reference collections in the study of Roman history.
