Good reference but a poor teacher!

This book is a good reference book if you are already transcribing. It is useless as a teaching tool without the audio tapes. The audio tapes are expensive for 6 - 90 minute tapes and must be ordered from Delmar Publishers. Unless you are enrolled in a class and have the tapes available from your school I would not recommend this book for beginners.

The discription of this book sounds good. It will make you think that you are going to learn from this book. In reality, you must have the audio tapes or the book is useless. I can't find the tapes to purchase.

The great Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy believed his was A Calendar of Wisdom. Here is a profound and passionate collaboration between the Great Creator and one of history's consummate artists. That we should be able to reach through the portcullis of the past to share the private observations that inspired Leo Tolstoy to discover the sacred in the ordinary a century after he gleaned them from the world's sacred texts seems to me to be nothing less than miraculous. You'll feel as if a devoted spiritual guide, with a wink in his eye, has secretly helped you circumvent the laws of heaven and earth in order to nourish and sustain you on your own personal journey to wholeness. Savoring each day's passage fills me with gratitude, delight, and often awe. Here is a book to be cherished.

Tolstoy's last major work.

I'm so glad to have found this book, a rare book in America, here for the first time in English (recently), apparently. It was one of Tolstoy's very last works (THE last?), and he stated that it was his favorite of his own books. Which was humble of him to say, because it's probably at least half composed of various quotations and sayings of wisdom from a wide array of philosophers, Christian, non-Christian, and even secular. The other half or so of the book is his own thoughts and messages to us. It's structured as a "daily devotional", and each day's entry has a particular topic or theme--the main points of which are (in this edition, though apparently not in the original work of Tolstoy's) conveniently italicized for us. Tolstoy was imperfect and inconsistent just like every other genius. (What IS "consistency"? Even machines and robots and assembly-lines make mistakes...) But he was much to be admired, I feel, for his often radical stands for conscience and truth in a typically corrupt contemporary society--in his case, Russia's. He made many controversial but impressive decisions (giving away much of his wealth, starting at least one Christian community, and voluntarily becoming a laborer, though he was by birth a privileged Count and aristocrat); he wrote many controversial works (like "The Kreutzer Sonata", a short story which was mostly a diatribe against lust and sexual politics, and which even encouraged celibacy in marriages!), and made many controversial statements (for instance, calling his two earlier, famous, epic novels "Anna Karenina" and "War & Peace", "the works of an idle mind," if memory serves.) He was a genuinely born-again Christian, but he was uncommonly friendly and open-minded toward other faiths and philosophers, as long as he discerned in them a genuine interest in truth and love. This book shows how "ecumenical" (in the best sense of that word) he came to be, in his old age. Yes, he might be divisive, but he was an honest seeker of truth, and I look forward to meeting him in Heaven. This "daily devotional"--a swan song, of sorts--is attractively typeset, formatted, and bound, and (most importantly) will surely give the seeker of truth many wise words & perspectives to meditate upon.

A Masterpiece Defaced

The work itself, whose correct title is “Circle of Reading”, is a great work. This edition, the only one available in English, is, however an entirely different matter. The content is butchered to about half the original length and there are many grievous mistakes in the translation. For example, a May 28th translation reads “You should not respect poor people too much…” whereas Tolstoy writes “Don’t respect the rich .” Another translation (May 17th) incorrectly reads “Libel and false reputation which you can destroy is the best school of goodness.” whereas the correct translation is “Libel and false reputation when you cannot prove your innocence is the best school of goodness.”

There are many mistakes and many omissions in the name index.

The most reprehensible aspect of this production is a recommendation by some new wave self-help author, which appears on the cover. She describes Tolstoy in terms of a Disneyland wizard, “a devoted guide with a wink in his eye…” It is rather like Lawrence Welk endorsing Wilhelm Furtwangler

She also addresses how Schiaparelli's early designs were acclaimed for the architectural quality of her silhouettes and her use of unconventional materials. After 1935 the designer's collections took on a new identity, partly from her close relationship with the Parisian artistic community, which included Man Ray, Salvador Dali, Jean Cocteau, and Alberto Giacometti. Illustrated with over 300 captivating reproductions of Schiaparelli clothing and accessories, this book also includes contemporary photos of her designs by such key fashion photographers as Horst and Cecil Beaton and sketches and stills from the films and plays with which she was associated. Together the text and illustrations celebrate a masterful designer who defined dressmaking as an art rather than a profession.

In Shocking! The Art and Fashion of Elsa Schiaparelli--a winking reference to her most famous perfume as well as to her designing audacity--Dilys E. Blum celebrates the couturiere whose achievements have long been eclipsed by her rival, Coco Chanel. A frustrated sculptor, Schiaparelli invested many of her garments of the 1930s and '40s with an architectural quality, from aerodynamic, back-swept bustles and overskirts dramatically curved back over themselves to stiff, fan-shaped peplums. She created a hat in the shape of an upside-down shoe, made comfy leopard-skin booties, and incorporated such novelties as monkey fur and Rhodophane, a transparent man-made fabric. Her clothes were worn by Mae West and heiress Millicent Rogers, by Helena Rubenstein and French film star Arletty. At her most eccentric, inspired by the artist Man Ray, Schiaparelli produced suede gloves with red snakeskin fingernails. At her most practical, she designed a daring (in 1931) silk tennis costume with a divided skirt. More than 300 stunning photographs, both vintage and contemporary, and a detailed yet lively text made this book a must for anyone interested in the history of fashion. Surrealist fashion designer Schiaparelli (1890-1973) gifted 71 of her own designs to an installation that Marcel Duchamp put together in 1942. In this exhaustive overview of Schiaparelli's design career, Blum presents that Duchamp collection (which now resides at the Philadelphia Museum of Art), along with 88 models and 5,800 original sketches donated by the designer to the Musee de la Mode et du Textile in Paris. Representing pre- and post-war designs, the book mixes new color photos of garments with documentary and fashion photos from Schiaparelli's lifetime. Blum, the Philadelphia Museum's curator of costume and textiles, organizes her work chronologically and thematically. She opens with the Roman-born Schiaparelli's first big success, a 1927 bowknot sweater that became one of her most copied designs, and ends with Schiaparelli's designs from the '50s, which includes a pair of sunglasses with the lenses trimmed with long blue eyelashes. This beautifully designed, large-format book with 306 illustrations would make a wonderful gift for anyone interested in the glamour of early 20th-century fashion.

The Schiaparelli Reference Bible!!!

I was blessed to have seen the Schiaparelli Exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and was so enthralled by the experience that I purchased the hardback and paperback version of the book by Dilys Blum. This book is STUNNING with many captivating photos and also many in depth stories about the collections. A must have for anyone who is interested in the arts and fashions of early 20th century courtesans and haute couture. Schiaparelli was a free spirit that took many risks, and a true pioneer many years ahead of her rival designers. It's wonderful to finally have a reference book that I consider a work of art upon itself!

Great price for a great book!

I already had this book from the exhibition. It was "borrowed" from my office and disappeared. I have been wanting to replace it, but the prices have been ridiculously high. This was the most reasonable price by far. It was in brand new perfect condition still shrink-wrapped. It is a great book. I'm grateful to get it at a great price.

Provides great insights into Mobile Testing

Great book and easy read. I really enjoyed this book since it provides a comprehensive guide to mobile testing. It covers almost all the aspects and challenges of mobile testing, its techniques, tools any many other important things as well. As a telecommunications professional I find the book pragmatic from start to end and including many tips which are I think very useful and practical to every level of testers and mobile application developers who are seeking a quick guide to mobile testing.

Entertaining and Inspirational!

I really enjoyed this book! It is very well written and captured my imagination from beginning to end! Many of the challenges that the main character (Morlen) overcomes can be applied to those challenges that we all face today. His eventual triumphs and development into a heroic figure are a testament to the virtues patience, resilience and faith despite all odds!

I highly recommend this entertaining and inspiring book!

A superb fantasy tale!

I first have to give kudos to Murray for his superb world-building skills. It is no easy feat for a reader to jump from one world into another. (The book that I read before this one was Hill's 'The Fireman', and I was completely immersed within that story...) However, Murray immediately sucked me into the world that he has created, and I never once looked back!

With names such as Morlen, Felkoth, Nottleforf, and Roftome, and items such as the Goldshard, the Crystal Spear, and the Dark Blade, and enemies known as Shriekers and Ferotaurs, you are immediately thrust into this superb fantasy tale!

Beginning with a fragile alliance between the city of Korindelf and Veldere, where the Eaglemasters reside, and with war brewing along their borders, you have no choice but to hold on for the ride!

If you are a fan of fantasy, then this one is a must-read! If you are a fan of Robin Hobb, then I suggest that you give Murray a shot, as there were some similarities, before Murray completely made it all his own. And for fans of Terry Goodkind, Murray explains the title of the book, brilliantly, just like one of Goodkind's "Wizard's Rules".

Murray dropped several hints, within this story, where he will take us in future books, and I for one am looking forward to the next book!

About the Author
The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche was born in Prussia in 1844. After the death of his father, a Lutheran minister, Nietzsche was raised from the age of five by his mother in a household of women. In 1869 he was appointed Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Basel, where he taught until 1879 when poor health forced him to retire. He never recovered from a nervous breakdown in 1889 and died eleven years later. Known for saying that “god is dead,” Nietzsche propounded his metaphysical construct of the superiority of the disciplined individual (superman) living in the present over traditional values derived from Christianity and its emphasis on heavenly rewards. His ideas were appropriated by the Fascists, who turned his theories into social realities that he had never intended.
R. J. Hollingdale has translated eleven of Nietzsche’s books and published two books about him. He has also translated works by, among others, Schopenhauer, Goethe, E. T. A. Hoffmann, Lichtenberg and Theodor Fontane, many of these for the Penguin Classics. He is Honorary President of the British Nietzsche Society, and was for the Australian academic year 1991 Visiting Fellow at Trinity College, Melbourne.

I got this book for a class and I'm very glad to have read this book. I found the philosophy very interesting and I don't even really like philosophy in general. Honestly, I would read this book again just because of how interesting I found it.

A Summary and A Polemic

"Twilight" is the book i always recommend to first-time readers of Nietzsche: It is the most concise statement of his most important ideas. If you read only one book by Nietzsche, make it this one. Both Hollingdale's and Kaufmann's translations are readable and try to be as faithful to the original as possible in style and substance.
If you were raised Christian or have been a Christian, "Antichrist" is quite important as an exposition of dangers in the philosophical underpinings of Christianity (or "Paulism") as world view and praxis, beyond ordinary criticisms that usually focus on the hypocrisy of the Church, etc, which are ultimately less useful. A less important read for those who have never been Christians, especially as N deals in "Twilight" with the "undercover Christianity" (Kantianism, etc.) one is likely to encounter outside the church.
By the way, a previous reviewer cautioned readers that these books were edited by Elisabeth, Nietzsche's sister-- that reviewer was mistaken. She edited only "The Will to Power," which despite her claims was not a book at all but a collection of unconnected notebook entries not intended for publication. Avoid that book until you've read all the rest. "Twilight" and "Antichrist" were written in the prolific year before N became ill and were certainly intended for publication.

Needless to say this defeats the purpose of using torrents. This problem is not with the Tor code, but rather the way that applications like BitLord and BitTorrent are designed. The torrent applications themselves need to be coded to allow anonymity. It is better to use Freenet with the Frost addon for p2p-like trading if you wish to remain anonymous. Tor is much more efficient at textual discussions, but the easiest method to do this anonymously is by use of remailers..."

Smart and timely

Really excellent book. Simple, straight-forward and easy to digest. Here is everything you need know to begin a life on Usenet. The author also takes us a little further into the future and issues some well-timed warnings about our loss of privacy, with the dangers of the Cloud and the ever-increasing reach of the State and Big Business. A decent if somewhat jumbled overview of Usenet from a privacy and anonymity perspective

I was skeptical when I bought the paperback version of this book from Amazon UK, but was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a decent read. It's a tough subject to completely cover in only 48 pages but the book does a reasonably good job.

Technology changes quickly and some of the materials are now a little dated as the book was published in 2012. For example, the book mentions secure SSL connections as an "option" when signing up for Usenet services but these are almost a universal feature of Usenet packages these days.

The book does a solid job of introducing Usenet and discussing its pros and cons, as well as many privacy aspects of using Usenet. The author makes a good case for why to stick with a major Usenet provider and also provides some brief but thoughtful reviews of the leading Usenet providers, including UsenetServer and Newshosting.

Admirably, the author is not shy about discussing and recommending some rather "controversial" alt.binaries newsgroups. The book also includes some great tips such as installing your Usenet newsreader app to an encrypted hard drive. I would further recommend saving your Usenet downloads to an encrypted drive or folder too.

At times, the book seems to cater to beginners while at other times to very advanced users. Some more in-depth discussion or analysis of some of the topics would have been good; for example, how VPNs provide added Usenet anonymity (yep, they do) and more information about multipart files. The last chapter, `Chapter 6: The Cloud is the Enemy of Usenet and Anonymity' was a bit "off" and contained elements that didn't seem too relevant. I also found that the book ended rather abruptly.

Overall, a decent if somewhat jumbled overview of Usenet from a privacy and anonymity perspective.

A Wonderful, Wonderful Book!

This story touched on a lot of heavy subjects, such as war, murder, rape (and reactions to it), anorexia, kidnapping, and poverty. However, the story itself was not depressing. The plot centers around Carrie, who has just started college at Stanford, and falls for Jake. Jake is her brother Stephan's roommate. Stephan and Carrie's roommate, Megan, fall for each other. But the story is not a simple romance, Jake feels his secrets should keep him away from Carrie, and Carrie ends up with other boyfriends, and gets engaged. Stephan marries Beth, who doesn't realize her business partner, Jon's adoration of her.
Usually in a story where more than one character's romance is told, I favor one's story more than the others, but this was not the case in this novel, I loved reading all their stories, and it wasn't confusing or hard to keep track of.
A reviewer mentioned that the ending was too storybook, but I really don't agree. This was a romance, so the ending was a happy one for pretty much all the characters. However, the characters weren't riding off into the sunset, they were happy with the ones they love, but there was still the unknowns of Jake's leg, Mark's reaction to Carrie calling off the engagement, Stephen's relationship with Megan's secret, and how Beth and Stephan will handle their new lives.
This was one of the best Katherine Stone books I've read (and I've read all of them), it was a touching, heartwarming story, and I completely recommend it to everyone.

This book had eluded me for years, ever since I first read it (at 13) and after reading it voraciously, lost it. I am not a fan of romance novels, but this book lured me in from the start -what a delicious read! It's one of those books that you'll put down with a satisfied sigh, and a month later, pick it up to begin again. I should know, I read "Roommates" over and over. Now that I've found out who the author is to this book, I am anxious to discover more of her work!

A good ol' traditional romance with plenty of suspense and danger, as well as love, light, and laughter to go around

Originally published in the 80s, Roommates--recently revived and republished--is an enrapturing, gratifying journey that magnificently illustrates the soaring highs and gloomy lows of the college experience, and how it has the sheer power to change lives forever.

The story begins Carrie's freshman year, set at Stanford, and immediately picks up on the lives of her roommates, the phenomenal actress Megan, and the devastating beauty and brains, Beth, as well. Carrie's imminent "flaw"--her tenacious and resilient loving, despite the occasional rejection--sets her up for a world of possibilities in college, as well as a whole new realm of heartbreak. However, Roommates is not just Carrie's story; it's Megan's, it's Beth's, it's her brother, Stephen's, and it's the mysterious and brooding Jake's. Their individual plots all overlap, and the relationships between these five Stanford students, are unmistakably laced together--and forever will be. This makes for a very complicated, very intricate web of a story. I found it a little too soap opera-esque for my taste, but have to admit how well-concocted it is--Katherine Stone is a flawless writer with such a compelling, lyrical voice.

I like how there's a bit of a thriller subplot that doesn't make the book solely about romance; it was refreshing and gripping, although nothing terribly exciting. As with most of Stone's novels, the depiction of love is cloyingly sweet, grandly optimistic, and rather chaste. If you don't like the guaranteed happily-ever-after story line and the inherently perfect cast of characters (seriously... all of them are attractive, nice, smart, generous, brave, etc. etc.), then you may want to stay away from this book. As for me, I do quite enjoy the spice in novels of today's time, but I still enjoyed Roommates's mellow, sentimental tone.

For a glittering narrative that spans not only the young adulthoods of five unforgettable characters, but also their creeping pasts and unpredictable later lives in 1970s America, definitely give Roommates a try.

Pros: Beautiful style // Well-explored, lovable characters // Evocative of the decade and the campus spirit of Stanford // Nice blend of romance, passion, and drama // Connections between characters satisfyingly elaborated upon and probed // Jake's difficult past and his emotional turmoil particularly resonated with me // Juicy plot twist I never saw coming

Cons: Every character (aside from the obvious villain) is good-natured through and through, which I found unusual // A bit too sugary sweet... but that's the appeal! // On the wordy side... not the kind of book you can read in one sitting

Love: "He had told her the truth, every truth, with no omissions. It was a factual recounting, without embellishment, the skeleton without the heart. But to the woman who was listening, and who was hearing his every word with a heart that loved him, the aching details, the ravaged emotions, were there."

Verdict: There's plenty of suspense and danger, as well as love, light, and laughter to go around in the hopelessly romantic--and fabulously nostalgic--Roommates. Days of Our Lives meets a tame, university-level Breakfast Club in an all-American story that flows like magic and is bound to captivate fans of conventional love stories. If you pine for a good ol' traditional romance, then Katherine Stone's 1987 novel--which just happens to be the prolific author's first--is THE book for you.

Rating: 7 out of 10 hearts (4 stars): Not perfect, but overall enjoyable.
