Not as decent as a BoCP or the Customary of OLOW

I wanted just a nice translation of the Psalms to carry around with me, and as a Ordinariate Catholic I wanted to keep the Coverdale Psalms. This edition does not format the Psalms in the Poetic/ verse form like the Scriptures normally do today. It is just in paragraph format. Nothing special. The quality of paper is nothing special either. The book is also pretty tall to carry around often. I would not really recommend it.

About the Author

Christopher Bryan, sometime scholar of Wadham College, Oxford, is C.K. Benedict Professor of New Testament Emeritus at the University of the South. Since his semi-retirement in 2008 he continues to write and teach, and is currently editor of the Sewanee Theological Review, one of only two Anglican quarterly journals of theology currently published in the United States.

Another great book on Jesus Christ's Resurrection!

I just finished reading this new book by Scholar Chrisopher Bryan. Once again another great book I have had the pleasure to read this year. This volume is both a kind of Biblical Commentary and Historical and Theological Essay combined. Professor Bryan covers the New Testament passages that have to do with the Death and Resurrection of Jesus. Well, specifically Paul's and the Gospel Passages. Then there are a number of great chapters on the historical and literary questions and details,on the historical question of the Resurrection itself. I found this to be the best part of the book and his arguments to be cogent and fair minded. I admit to struggling with the miraculous aspects of scripture. Yet it is that part of the Bible that is the most important in my opinion. It ties in with questions of Meaning, Theodicy and Power. Is there hope for us all? Does God have real Power? I think our culture lives in real denial of Death, and its horrific finality. Much of the life after death ideas that many people hold, are simplistic and not thought through very well. Much of it borders on Gnostic ideas of the evil nature of physical life. That is not The Christian view! This world and reality is seen as good and very important. Much of the Bible teaches that this World is to be RE-Created! Now of course this is just about impossible to conceptualize. The fact that the first people who claimed to be witnesses of these events, went on to suffer and even die for it, gives weight to what they say. In the essays at the end of the book, Professor Bryan brings up some very good arguments for the basic truth of the New Testament witness to the Resurrection of Jesus. He brings up the counter views of scholars such as Crossan, Bultman and others and makes good arguments, countering their skeptical theories. Of course by the very nature of Historical study. Knock down proof is just not possible in most historical investigation. Then there is always the questions of all of our personal biases. Everyone comes to this subject with pre-held biases of a philosophical, Theological and spirtitual nature. As the great German Theologian Wolfhart Pannenberg, has often pointed out. The Resurrection will always be debatable and the final answer will only be when the promised Resurrection of all peoples happens. The purely historical argument is that it is highly probable that Jesus Christ was raised from the Dead, in my opinion. But it takes a faith commitment to go on from there, and to say that "God" Raised Him from the Dead. Some Contemporary Theologians say that that in itself is the definition of who and what God is. God is the Reality that raised Jesus from the dead and promises to do the same for the rest of Humanity in the future. Teasing out all the ramifications of this belief, is what Christian Theology is about. I highly recommend this book. Thanks for taking the time to read my Review.

A very comprehensive survey

This is a scholarly work. It dissects the biblical texts in great details, and explores various exegetical and philological dimensions with great skills. The arguments for the validity of the accounts are standard (cf. The Resurrection of the Son of God (Christian Origins and the Question of God, Vol. 3) and The Resurrection of Jesus: A New Historiographical Approach), but the intense milking of the original texts is very rewarding.

The last chapter explores the meaning of it all. If we accept that the resurrection of Jesus is historical fact, then what is its significance? In less than twenty pages (pp 173-189), it makes sense of the whole Easter story. It is nothing gratuitous at all. Once it is pointed out, that it becomes so obvious. Truly inspiring.

Brilliant Scientific Insight

Maxlow is a geology professor who was attempting to validate the popular theory of Plate Techtonics by using the most advanced research information which was not available when the PT theory was created. He looked at the modern ocean floor mapping data and noticed that the ages of the ocean floor told a story as clear as the growth rings of a tree. If one simply backed up the continents along the lines of the ocean age lines, all of the continents fit perfectly together, just as they do in the Pangea model, but with no oceans. The continents not only fit across the Atlantic, but also across the Pacific, and between Asia and Antactica. The only thing keeping scientists from accepting his work is that they cannot fathom how it would be possible for the earth to have ever been smaller than it is today and yet all evidence points to that being the case.

This is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the Earth's history. James Maxlow's work moves geology farther forward than anyone since Sir Charles Lyell. Maxlow's work has major implications in the understanding of our planet's geology and biodiversity.

governing the soul = neoliberal governance at a distance

This book is Nikolas Rose's masterpiece about neoliberalism's attempts at "governance at a distance". Governing the soul is basically a euphemism for the attempt by neoliberal regimes to get citizens to govern themselves. Why get citizens to govern themselves? So the state can do, in the words of Osborne and Gaebler in Reinventing Government, "less of the rowing and more of the steering". There is a view that the welfare state had intervened too much into the day-to-day lives of citizens that civil society had become dependent on the government to meet their needs. Governing the soul means transforming those who had become dependent on the government into autonomous "selves" capable of carrying out self-governance. There is a notion that the self is not a given, as the humanist conception of self advocates, but is created through the choices we make. If you don't like who you are, make yourself up as someone different. Thus, governing the soul is directly related to governing through choice/freedom--a key aspect of "rule at a distance". This conception of self as "made up" can be seen today in the many talk shows, namely Oprah Winfrey, in which people are transformed from the lowly selves they were into the new selves they want to be through the process of choice. I would recommend this book to any who like Foucault's works because Rose's Foucauldian roots are clear in his arguments about nothing being given and everything being the product of history--"the history of the present" is a Foucauldian idea. Also, I would recommend Graham Burchell's works on "techniques of the self" because these techniques are actually analogous to Rose's "governing the soul".

This has got to be one of my favorite, if not the favorite, textbooks of all-time! I did not appreciate the cost, even for rental, but the text is jam-packed with valuable information for the budding entrepreneur! Don't plan on returning this book if you are planning on becoming a business owner. Do yourself a favor and purchase it!

Everyone should read this book

I highly, highly recommend "Mommy I'm Still in Here." Until I read this book, I had a very poor understanding of what it means to have bipolar disorder. My daughter was diagnosed in her late 20s with bipolar disorder, and after reading this book, we have been able to mend the wounds to our relationship. We were once very close but our relationship was nearly destroyed by her mental illness. It was all because I did not understand what was happening to her, and she was unable to tell me. She has a B.A. in Psychology. If she couldn't explain it to me, I am certain there are many families who are experiencing even worse problems than we did. Part of it is denial, part of it is ignorance. If your child has been diagnosed with bipolar, buy this book and read it. If you have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, buy this book and read it, then give it to your family and friends to read.

One of the best Childhood Bipolar book we have read...

This is a most helpful book about childhood bipolar disorder. We have a grandson who is 7 and has suffered with bipolar since infancy. (Didn't know what it was then...just knew he was one easily frustrated and miserable kid -- or, conversely, the most beautiful and placid baby!) Anyway, I highly recommend this book to parents and grandparents of children from 0 to 20 with bipolar. Author is so candid and yet upbeat. She made us feel completely understood with the pendulum swing of our OWN moods while coping with a misdiagnosed and suicidal 3 yr old! God bless the author for sharing her trials and providing hope for us! LOVE THE TITLE -- PERFECT!!

Handy little book!

I recently purchased this book for a quick trip to Europe. We were staying in Amsterdam for only 4 days so we wanted to hit the highlights. The size is perfect to carry around and the color maps were great (including street index).

I used this book for only 2 days - and then I accidentally left it at a restaurant. I couldn't get back there to find it (long story). I was so bummed - I really liked this little book. The book has a "Top 10" theme throughout. "Top 10 Artists" "Top 10 Museums" "Top 10 Moments in Amsterdam History" etc. They also have Hotel recommendations and well as general travel tips.

There is a phrase list in the back for Dutch. DK gives you a couple one-day iteneraries in case you would like guidance. The pictures are also superb - that is one thing I love about DK Eyewitness books.

I also have the Top 10 Brussels/Bruges/Antwerp/Ghent book - so I wouldn't hesitate to get another "Top 10" book if I wanted a quick-read travel guide.

Excellent and concise guidebook

We used this guidebook on our recent 5-day trip to Amsterdam, and were very satisfied with it. It had two excellent maps of the city, which we used constantly. It also pointed us to the most prominent historical and cultural points of interest, and we were able to fit most of them in during our trip. The descriptions in the book were short, but contained enough information for us to tell whether we wanted to visit the places described. If you only get one guidebook to take to Amsterdam, this is a great one.

Excellent Guide Book

This was my first time using an EyeWitness guidebook and it definitely won't be the last. This guide is organized very well with maps everywhere. They cover the various areas of the city with detail on everything from sight seeing options to food, night life, etc. I just got back from Amsterdam and this guide was in my hand constantly.

I highly recommend this if you are unfamiliar with the city.
