Will there always be someone who is deemed less than someone else? Will humans always prey upon the vulnerable and less unfortunate? According to Edmond West, an MIT dropout, the answer is yes, humans will always look for someone to enslave or pick on. Believing this, Edmond decides to create robots that can be the recipients of humans cruelty so people no longer have to be. After working years in secret, Edmond creates Hart, an artificial intelligence so perfect that she is indistinguishable from humans. Hart learns, interacts with people, shows emotions, and even bleeds; however, when Hart is given free will, things change. Will the artificial intelligent be the exploited or will the humans? On the one hand, the reader can predict what will happen, but on the other, the story is fast paced and well written. Edmond is a believable character. The reader does not have to be as brilliant as Edmond to understand the technology and robotic science that goes into creating Hart it is well within the reader s reach. There are enough unresolved issues and possibilities for different twists that readers will look forward to the next book in what is advertised as a six-book series. This hi-low series could easily find a wider relationship than expected, and subsequent books will undoubtedly have waiting lists. --Voya

Love the story about robots; hate the publisher's money-grubbing publishing style

This is the first part of a six-book series that should have been published as one book. The publisher, Epic Press, is an imprint of educational publisher Abdo Press. Epic Press has stretched book 1, Emergent Behavior, out to 200 pages by using very large type (bigger than type for elderly people's books), wide spacing between lines, and the addition of fluff words. They've also put a library binding on it, so it costs three times what it would have if published as a paperback. To add insult to injury, the author's name is in tiny black type at the bottom of a dark grey cover (not blue as the picture shows). I couldn't find it at first. Finally, the book seems to be aimed at a teen market, but the protagonist, Edmond, is an adult through most of book 1 and I assume for the remaining books as well.

I took off a star for these shenanigans. Perhaps I should have taken off two—but none of these problems were the author's fault.

The story itself is compelling. I quickly came to love Edmond even as I saw his na�vit� and his belief that other people are as well-intentioned as he is would get him into trouble.

Edmond hates the idea of slavery. He hates people being violent toward each other or going to war and dying. An electronics genius, he has an inspiration he thinks is the solution to making the world peaceful and free: robots that look identical to real humans and who can be abused instead of people. He spends book 1 creating iteration after iteration of his idea, each robot closer to human than the one before. Then he finally wakes up to what manufacturers and the military intend to do with such robots.

Unlike some series, book 1 ends with a satisfying conclusion, not just an arbitrary break. However, the story is exciting enough that I want to read book 2 and find out what happens next.

Robotics prodigy Edmond West creates the first Artificial Intelligent being that people can not tell the difference between man and machine. But after hiding her for so long the government finally finds out and wants Edmond to mass produce more like her, however, Edmond knows this will just lead to the AI's enslavery, and that is when the action starts. This I believe might be a book before its time, I am hoping it is not to advanced in the science part (especially for this opening book) for teens, because I think the idea and background for the book is awesome and so much can be done, so I guess we will just have to see where the author goes from here.

Larry Huch is the founder and senior pastor of DFW New Beginnings in Irving, Texas. A good tool for parents

Family is definitely something I am very passionate about. Even though we have a formula that we feel works well for our family, I love to keep reading and learning and investigating marriage, family and parenting ideas. For one thing, if I find just one thing to improve what we are doing then it was worth the time and effort. Second, even if I don't find something that is new to me, I often do find something I can recommend to someone else who comes seeking advice.

Releasing Family Blessings by Larry and Tiz Huch is just such a book. I was previously unfamiliar with this couple who Pastor a very large church in Texas and have published numerous books. I am looking forward to checking out some of their titles which deal with Jewish history for Christians.... a relatively new passion of mine.

I particularly liked the 15 Habits of Happy Couples found in Chapter 4. As I read through that chapter I found each of the items mentioned were things that have definitely been part of what we consider a full and happy marriage for Allen and I.

Likewise the principles they list in Chapter 6 for building a strong family and the Keys to Effective Parenting in Chapter 7 are very practical applications drawn from God's word and experience.

Don't stop there, though. The authors take time to deal with how to keep your children's hearts and have a ministry, too. This is an area that has been a heartbreak for Allen and I for most of our years in the church. We have watched one family after another fall apart despite their presence at every church function and their involvement in every ministry opportunity. We have definite beliefs on the cause and reason for this phenomena and I believe the Huch's hit a home run.

Disclaimer: As is the case with every movie or book review, unless otherwise stated, I do not give a blanket endorsement for everything in this book, the Huch's or their ministry. Releasing Family Blessings is chock full of many practical lessons that will enrich families and marriages for the Lord, I do not agree with everything this couple practices in their ministry.

Being good parents and building strong families and marriages is so important to winning souls for the Lord and building His kingdom and I think this book could be a useful tool for many couples to reach those ends.

Jennifer Westall loves writing Christian fiction as a way of exploring her own faith journey. Breaking Matthew (2015) is the second volume in the Healing Ruby series. If you liked the first book, you'll love this one even more!

I loved the first book, Healing Ruby, and now just finished reading Breaking Matthew.
If you haven't read the first book, you should. It will help you understand the setting. Story starts 4 years after the first book. Both Matthew and Ruby a little more grown up.
I love this series. From the setting, characters, turn of events...there are so much going on.
I don't really give it all away, but if you think this book is all about Matthew from the title, don't worry, this book is still about Ruby, Asa and other characters from the first book along with Matthew. If you liked Matthew from the first book, you will like him even more in this book.
I can't wait to start on the next one now.

A Completely Different, Yet Very Great Sequel

I am rating Breaking Matthew five stars because it deserves it, and was a solid 5-star story. However, it feels unfair after rating the first book in the series, Healing Ruby, five stars as well. If Breaking Matthew is a five-star book, then Healing Ruby is a 10-star.

This book, although well-written, interesting, and fun, just couldn't really compare to its predecessor. I'd say it was more typical Christian romantic suspense, a genre I am very familiar with. I love the courtroom scenes, personally, and I really enjoyed having Matthew's perspective. I identify with Matthew more than I do Ruby, so hearing his perspective and passion and humanness was refreshing and fun.

It was good to see Ruby be humbled, matured, and tempered down yet keep her godly faith and integrity. I really appreciated her growth in this book and thought it was a good sequel in terms of character growth and story continuation.

The culmination of two characters' romance was anticlimactic though, which was disappointing. We had been 100% in the girl's POV in the first novel, listening to her heartache and angst, so to miss her reactions, thoughts, relief, and joy in response to her first confession of love and first kiss was disappointing and left me with more of a numb effect than anything.

The plot completely surprised me and did not go as planned one bit, and there was a nice twist.

It was definitely a page turner, like a reverse To Kill a Mockinbird, and kept me up to 4 AM! Although it was much more of an easy read than the first book, Healing Ruby, which left me emotionally raw, moved, and touched in ways that the sequel simply did not.

I really, really enjoyed this series! Sure hope another final one comes out soon. I had to have this second one after I read the first. Jennifer Westall has becomes one of my favorite authors.
I finished the second one in 1 day in this busy Christmas season. Just couldn't put it down.

In his first book since 1999, it's just like old times as Vonnegut (now 82) makes with the deeply black humor in this collection of articles written over the last five years, many from the alternative magazine In These Times. But the pessimistic wisecracks may be wearing thin; the conversational tone of the pieces is like Garrison Keillor with a savage undercurrent. Still, the schtick works fine most of the time, underscored by hand-lettered aphorisms between chapters. Some essays suffer from authorial self-indulgence, however, like taking a dull story about mailing a manuscript and stretching it to interminable lengths. Vonnegut reserves special bile for the "psychopathic personalities" (i.e., "smart, personable people who have no consciences") in the Bush administration, which he accuses of invading Iraq so America can score more of the oil to which we have become addicted. People, he says, are just "chimpanzees who get crazy drunk on power." Of course, that's exactly the sort of misanthropy hardcore Vonnegut fans will lap up—the online versions of these pieces are already described as the most popular Web pages in the history of In These Times. About the Author
Born in 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana, KURT VONNEGUT�was one of the few grandmasters of modern American letters. Called by the New York Times “the counterculture’s novelist,” his works guided a generation through the miasma of war and greed that was life in the U.S. in second half of the 20th century. After a stints as a soldier, anthropology PhD candidate, technical writer for General Electric, and salesman at a Saab dealership, Vonnegut rose to prominence with the publication of Cat’s Cradle in 1963. Several modern classics, including Slaughterhouse-Five, soon followed. Never quite embraced by the stodgier arbiters of literary taste, Vonnegut was nonetheless beloved by millions of readers throughout the world. “Given who and what I am,” he once said, “it has been presumptuous of me to write so well.” Kurt Vonnegut died in New York in 2007.

As a kid I was the youngest member of my family, and the youngest child in any family is always a jokemaker, because a joke is the only way he can enter into an adult conversation. My sister was five years older than I was, my brother was nine years older than I was, and my parents were both talkers. So at the dinner table when I was very young, I was boring to all those other people. They did not want to hear about the dumb childish news of my days. They wanted to talk about really important stuff that happened in high school or maybe in college or at work. So the only way I could get into a conversation was to say something funny. I think I must have done it accidentally at first, just accidentally made a pun that stopped the conversation, something of that sort. And then I found out that a joke was a way to break into an adult conversation.

I grew up at a time when comedy in this country was superb—it was the Great Depression. There were large numbers of absolutely top comedians on radio. And without intending to, I really studied them. I would listen to comedy at least an hour a night all through my youth, and I got very interested in what jokes were and how they worked.

When I’m being funny, I try not to offend. I don’t think much of what I’ve done has been in really ghastly taste. I don’t think I have embarrassed many people, or distressed them. The only shocks I use are an occasional obscene word. Some things aren’t funny. I can’t imagine a humorous book or skit about Auschwitz, for instance. And it’s not possible for me to make a joke about the death of John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King. Otherwise I can’t think of any subject that I would steer away from, that I could do nothing with. Total catastrophes are terribly amusing, as Voltaire demonstrated. You know, the Lisbon earthquake is funny.

I saw the destruction of Dresden. I saw the city before and then came out of an air-raid shelter and saw it afterward, and certainly one response was laughter. God knows, that’s the soul seeking some relief.

Any subject is subject to laughter, and I suppose there was laughter of a very ghastly kind by victims in Auschwitz.

Humor is an almost physiological response to fear. Freud said that humor is a response to frustration—one of several. A dog, he said, when he can’t get out a gate, will scratch and start digging and making meaningless gestures, perhaps growling or whatever, to deal with frustration or surprise or fear.

And a great deal of laughter is induced by fear. I was working on a funny television series years ago. We were trying to put a show together that, as a basic principle, mentioned death in every episode and that this ingredient would make any laughter deeper without the audience’s realizing how we were inducing belly laughs.

There is a superficial sort of laughter. Bob Hope, for example, was not really a humorist. He was a comedian with very thin stuff, never mentioning anything troubling. I used to laugh my head off at Laurel and Hardy. There is terrible tragedy there somehow. These men are too sweet to survive in this world and are in terrible danger all the time. They could be so easily killed.


Even the simplest jokes are based on tiny twinges of fear, such as the question, “What is the white stuff in bird poop?” The auditor, as though called upon to recite in school, is momentarily afraid of saying something stupid. When the auditor hears the answer, which is, “That’s bird poop, too,” he or she dispels the automatic fear with laughter. He or she has not been tested after all.

“Why do firemen wear red suspenders?” And “Why did they bury George Washington on the side of a hill?” And on and on.

True enough, there are such things as laughless jokes, what Freud called gallows humor. There are real-life situations so hopeless that no relief is imaginable.

While we were being bombed in Dresden, sitting in a cellar with our arms over our heads in case the ceiling fell, one soldier said as though he were a duchess in a mansion on a cold and rainy night, “I wonder what the poor people are doing tonight.” Nobody laughed, but we were still all glad he said it. At least we were still alive! He proved it.

A Quick Read Which Will be Sure To Get You Thinking!

A Man Without A Country is a surefire hit for any Vonnegut fan. The book is a collection of ideas and short writings from the mind of 82 year old Kurt Vonnegut. The writings are reminiscent of a modern day blogger which is ironic considering Vonnegut's dislike of technological advance. I feel that his writings in this semi-memoire were quite amusing, well organized and inciteful. His feelings on war and the current state of this country are a little off the beaten path but they open your eyes to another way of thinking. I was also very impressed by his comparison of gasoline/petrolium to drug addiction. Overall this is a great book and a very quick read. Vonnegut will surely go down in history as one of the greatest writers of all time.

Used this book after passively floating through Human Japanese 1/2 (which was great, but I didn't get as much as I should have). I highly recommend it.

Pros:
-Short lessons followed immediately by short exercises to cement it in place.
-Has kanji (the intimidatingly complicated picture words used EVERYWHERE in real Japanese) in it, but not everything is kanji.
-lots of vocab (introduced and then put into practice)
-Tells you on the back that after finishing this book, you should be an 'advanced beginner,' which is useful for choosing what your next step will be

Cons:
-There is no hirigana translation for the kanji, just the romaji (english letters spelling out the pronuncation of the word), which is fine with me, but others don't like.

In response to the reviewer who says that this is a phrase book with no real explanation, I didn't feel that way at all.

I would not say this is for true beginners

This is a workbook and so that is really helpful. You can take it with you and do not need any extra paper etc as you just write in the book. There are good summarizing sections on numbers, counting, holidays/events, animals, plants, places, telephone numbers, basic conversations, and reading which is all very useful. Could be used as a good review by anyone with late beginner to intermediate Japanese who perhaps had not practiced in a while. However, by page 30 you will start seeing kanji and by 130 you will see whole passages in kanji so for true beginners this is a bit challenging. The romaji is given for the kanji but the kana is not. It would have been nice to have all three once the kanji started so you could read the kana and associate it with the specific reading context of the kanji as there is no furigana. Having just the romaji is ok but does not reinforce your reading and recognition of kana which is essential to beginners. You will be constantly translating romaji to kana in your head which does not help you think in Japanese.

I do not like it.

Hey, I do not have Kindle and do not understand it. So, I never even got into the system to read anything, and was charged I believe 24.99 anyways. I clicked on it to see if I can get a book shipped to my P.O. address, but it immediately charged me. I was hoping to KEEP IT SIMPLE. So, since I was immediately charged without any service or intro into what I was getting into, I do not like it.
