Ms Fong has great depth of understanding only children...

While I am only one fourth of the way through this book, I have thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a great deal about the ramifications of China's one-child policy. Of course, being at the age that I am, I was an adult when they adopted the policy and knew that eventually this was going to be a problem. One thing that truly resonated with me was Ms Fong's very accurate description of the difference between having one child and having many. In the Kindle edition it is between location 709 and 715. She states that Western ears might not understand how shidu parents ( those who lost their one and only child) feel more devastation than what the parents of several children feel upon the loss of one child. As the parent of an only child, I understand very well, even with my Western ears. I was unable to have any more children after the one. The people that I have voiced my feelings about this, that the loss of my one child would be an all-encompassing feeling of complete disaster and the loss would be greater than that of a parent who lost one child but has two more remaining. They would tell me that I just did not understand, that they love each of their children as much as I love my only. That I do not dispute. However, they do not understand, actually, that when one's only child is gone, there will be no consolation. No weddings, no graduations, no grandchildren scampering happily around a Christmas tree, being spoiled by Grandma and Grandpa. Its not that I love my one child more, but the utter sense of loss would be astronomically more devastating.
For the Chinese, in their time-honored tradition of one generation tending to the generation prior and even the generation prior to that, this loss is far, far worse.
I've often wondered how many Chinese citizens who did abort or commit infanticide to rid themselves of unwanted female infants are very sorry since those little girls are now quite the commodity. And those of us in the West cannot pretend that the woes that China will face because of this policy will not touch us over here on this side of the world. It will.

Very thorough

I am a closet cultural anthropologist and love learning about other cultures. This book was an excellent read.
The exploration of the many repercussions of China's one child policy was informative and engaging. There are so many connections to recent world social policies, population changes, and social dynamics that no one could have foreseen. As an open minded educated individual I see both sides of the coin: China was darned if they enacted this policy...and darned if they didn't. This book tells us what happened as a result of the One Child Policy. But what would have happened if they did not? How many more people would live in China? Pollution? Overcrowding? Women's roles? Elderly care? The education system? rural vs urban? The list goes on and on. Thank you Mei Fong - this was a most interesting subject. I highly recommend.

Excellent book. Interesting and shows exactly how a government ...

Excellent book. Interesting and shows exactly how a government can destroy its own society. America is on the same path. The government should work FOR the people not hunt them down and force them to do things the government wants them to do. Of course, women are the target and reproductive rights are what governments always want to control. Well, China may never dig themselves out of the hole they dug for themselves and as long as governments have POWER OVER THE PEOPLE things like this will keep happening. I definitely recommend this book. It's shocking to see what lengths the government will go to in order to get what they want and it shows the corruption that surrounds their decisions.
