About the Author
Dr Anthony Bunsell is Research Professor responsible for studies in the fields of fibre reinforcements and fibre composites at the Materials Centre of the Ecole des Mines de Paris. He is also Professor at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. He has authored more than 250 papers in international scientific journals and has produced fifteen books on materials science, composites and fibres. He has received a number of rewards for his research and was the first person to be made life Fellow of the French Association for Composite Materials (AMAC) and is only one of very few recipients of the title World Fellow of the International Committee on Composite Materials.

Good for quick information...

When I took a 4-day trip to Finland I brought this and Insight Guide Finland (Insight Guides). Once in the country, I mainly relied on this book to make last-minute travel decisions and such, and the information I used turned out to be quite accurate. For the most part I was satisfied with it, but it is certainly not an all-in-one travel guide. There are very few pictures, and very little attempt is made to describe the country; entries are rather encyclopedic in style, like many of the other Lonely Planet guides. It works well for practical information, but I would not recommend relying entirely on this guide for planning a visit to Finland.

Great Guide

As the author of Miriam Daughter of Finnish Immigrants I was invited to present my book at an international conference in Turku, Finland. In preparation for my first trip to Finland, I purchased The Lonely Planet as a guide book. The book provided a wealth of information about the history of Finland, the Finnish culture, points of interest and helpful hints for tourists. My sister and I used it everyday as we planned our sight seeing activities in Turku and Helsinki. Definitely make room for this book in your Finland travel gear!

Lonely Planet travel guide

Lonely Planet travel guides have been the best travel guides I have ever used. They are full of useful information for every aspect of a trip. I have always appreciated the wide range of places to stay and places to eat from economy to luxurious. They have never let me down, and this one is no exception. I wouldn't visit a new country without a copy of the Lonely Planet guide.

What a cool cat Socrates is (and by extension Plato). Made it through first four dialogues, skipped number five, and now am 30 pages into the Republic, my reason for the purchase in the first place. The basis of Western philosophy (alongside Judeo-Christian thought). Great stuff.

Great Translation!

A great translation of Plato's best. I ordered this as a rhetoric student hoping to explore more into Plato's thinking and teaching. This is wonderful. It is small enough to carry with me in my purse or book bag. It is, sadly, paperback, which means I've already torn the cover slightly, but that is what always happens with paperbacks for me.

Menachem Begin was a participant in the major events in modern Jewish history: the evolution of Zionism, resistance to the Nazi genocide, Soviet conquest of Eastern Europe, struggle against British rule in Palestine, founding of the state of Israel and the peace treaty with Egypt, which won him a Nobel Prize.

Begin was a controversial figure, commander of the Irgun, an underground Army which fought against the British Mandatory regime in Palestine. Required reading for those interested in the birth of Israel

A fascinating account of the role of the underground army of Eretz Israel, known as the Irgun Zvai Leumi, by its commander-in-chief, and late Israeli statesman and Prime Minister, Menachem Begin.

A story known by relatively few, a first hand account of one side of the resistance movement that resulted in the birth of modern Israel. The Irgun was considered by many Jews and non-Jews alike to be a terrorist organization. After reading this book, one will find out why Israel would probably not have been created without the controversial efforts of the Irgun. One will similarly discover the difference between a freedom fighter and a terrorist (even though Begin actually refers to himself as a "terrorist" in the book; possibly a result of no proper equivalent translation from the original Hebrew. Hint: a freedom fighter does not attack civilian targets.

After a brief introduction of Begin's earlier life as a prisoner of the Bolsheviks before the Nazi invasion of Poland, Begin recounts the history of the Irgun as its leader from 1943, until the creation of the State of Israel in 1948. The "resistance movement" consisted of David Ben-Gurion's Jewish Agency for Palestine, the semi-legal Jewish army known as the Haganah, and the underground movement of the Irgun (and a smaller break away underground army known as the Stern Group. Although the former and latter were at times allies, and at other times bitter enemies, the message of the book is how each group needed the other components to accomplish the goal of a free Israel.

With the fervor of a brilliant statesman, and the eloquence of a lawyer (which he was), Begin writes a gripping account of the history of the Irgun and its methods. The Irgun worked primarily by audacious "confiscation" of British arms and attack of military and British police installations with its primary weapon, dynamite.

Included are separate chapters of the most famous exploits of the Irgun, including the Altalena affair, Operation Chick, the blowing up of the south wing of the King David Hotel (which served as the seat of the civil and military British occupation authority), the battle for Jaffa, the counter-floggings and counter-hangings of British officers in retaliation for the same of Irgun Freedom fighters,

An especially fascinating chapter entitled "Meetings in the Dark" recounts Commander Begin's meetings with various dignitaries (such as Dr. Ralph Bunche) which were litterly held in a darkened room, so Begin could not be identified (he had a high price on his head by the British).

One cannot help, after reading this book, to appreciate the role of Begin (and his organization, the Irgun) played in ejecting the British from Eretz Israel, to form the modern State of Israel, and the stupidity of the infighting between the various components of the resistance movement (whose methods complemented each other).

Although the primary subject of the book is the history of the Irgun, the reader will no doubt become interested in the biography of the author, who later served in the Knesset, in the cabinet (as minister without portfolio), until he finally rose to power as Prime Minister of Israel in the late 1970's, and death in relatively obscurity shortly after his wife's death in the late 1980's.

My copy of "The Revolt" is the 9th English Edition, published in Israel by Steimatsky. It is personally autographed by Begin's late wife Aliza, January 1979.

Masterful story that receives little recognition today

The revolt is the Menachin Begins personal account, as the leader of one of the Jewish underground factions, of the founding of the state of Israel. Those who discount the idea of Zionism (Jewish nationalism) as nothing more than western colonialism need to read this book. Perhaps Begin in later years said it best: When asked to give up Jerusalem (the capital of Israel) in the same manner that the French gave up Algeria, Beign replied that the French would not give up Paris and the British would not give up London.

Inside the Irgun

This book takes you into and underground with the Irgun Zvi Leumi. The jewish freedom fighter organization led by Begin during the years leading up to the establishment of the state of Israel. It was very interesting getting Begin's view on the contraversal organization on subjects such as Ben-Gurion and Dier Yassin. Begin takes you into this underground world that reads with the excitment of a ficticious novel. Every reader will come away inspired by the charasmatic leader. However, to get a true prospective on Begin himself, this is not the book. Begin is very modest about his leadership and focus's more on the organization rather than himself. Although, some is lost in the translation from Hebrew to English, you won't come away dissapointed

This book is intended to help students develop their own well-informed and well-reasoned views on key contemporary moral issues such as abortion and capital punishment and also to help students to understand and appreciate the views of those on other sides of the issues.  In order to do this, the book provides and analyzes key ethical arguments on each issue, provides important empirical background on each issue, and offers compelling personal narratives from individuals confronting these issues in real life. This book grew out of teaching a course at the University of San Diego on contemporary moral issues, and I am grateful to my students over the years for their insights and participation.  If you use this book and have suggestions about how to make it better, please don't hesitate to email me at hinman@sandiego.edu.

Murakami's seventh novel to be translated into English is a short, enigmatic chronicle of unrequited desire involving three acquaintances the narrator, a 24-year-old Tokyo schoolteacher; his friend Sumire, an erratic, dreamy writer who idolizes Jack Kerouac; and Miu, a beautiful married businesswoman with a secret in her past so harrowing it has turned her hair snowy white. When Sumire abandons her writing for life as an assistant to Miu and later disappears while the two are vacationing on a Greek island, the narrator/teacher travels across the world to help find her. Once on the island, he discovers Sumire has written two stories: one explaining the extent of her longing for Miu; the second revealing the secret from Miu's past that bleached her hair and prevents her from getting close to anyone. All of the characters suffer from bouts of existential despair, and in the end, back in Tokyo, having lost both of his potential saviors and deciding to end a loveless affair with a student's mother, the narrator laments his loneliness. Though the story is almost stark in its simplicity more like Murakami's romantic Norwegian Wood than his surreal Wind-Up Bird Chronicles the careful intimacy of the protagonists' conversation and their tightly controlled passion for each other make this slim book worthwhile. Like a Zen koan, Murakami's tale of the search for human connection asks only questions, offers no answers and must be meditated upon to provide meaning. Murakami's (Norwegian Wood) seventh book in translation is a love story wrapped in a mystery packaged in a light-side/dark-side philosophical wrapper. While in college, the narrator falls in love with untidy novelist manqu Sumire, who wants only to be best friends. They talk and talk. Sumire later falls hard for Miu, an older, married woman for whom she begins working. Then, on a business/pleasure trip to Greece with Miu, Sumire disappears. From a plot standpoint, this disappearance, which occurs a third of the way through the book, is the first time that anything interesting happens. The narrator's fixation on Sumire is not all that fascinating, nor is its object. As for Murakami's vaunted writing, one gets more dead-hit metaphors per ream from "commercial" writers like Loren Estleman. The philosophical black/white/doppelg nger stuff is not without interest, but not normally the stuff of the (American) mass market. Recommended for Murakami initiates and large fiction collections.

and this is one of my favorite books of his that I've read lately

I'm no writer, so I hesitate to review a book. I can only talk about my feelings while reading it. I'm a giant fan of Murakami's work, and this is one of my favorite books of his that I've read lately.
I was glued to the pages almost immediately. Human loneliness was a big theme in the book and I feel like it really managed to capture that feeling that we all have in varying degrees. I'll admit I teared up once or twice.
The prose is his usual mix of matter-of-fact, poetic and surreal.
I highly recommend this book.

Murakami, short and sweet!

"Sputnik Sweetheart", by Haruki Murakami.

Sumire feels at odds with the world. Her only passion in life to date has been writing though she has had almost no success with it either. K, Sumire's former college classmate and only friend is her only real connection in the world. K has fallen in love with Sumire however the feeling isn't mutual as Sumire has never had that kind of desire for anyone that is until she meets Miu. Sumire takes a job with Miu that eventually leads them to a vacation on an island off the coast of Greece from which Sumire disappears. With no one else to turn to Miu contacts K and he heads off to help in the search...

"Sputnik Sweetheart" is my fifth Murakami experience. "Kafka on the Shore" is still my favorite but "Sputnik Sweetheart", is a good short read from Murakami and captures many of the elements and themes that are prevalent throughout Murakami's works.

The Good: Murakami's writing always draws me in. I always enjoy the characters, the story, the way as the reader you are privy to Japanese culture in small servings, and the always prevalent spiritual and metaphysical elements than run rampant in Murakami's stories. These elements allow him to take what would normally be a relatively simple plot and turn it into a story with depth.

The Bad: Nothing memorable.

Overall: If you are a fan of Murakami's other work you will probably enjoy Sputnik Sweetheart as well. If you haven't tried Murakami before this may not be a bad place to start because it is one of his shorter stories.

I've read a lot of Murakami novels and have to say although this one is quite a good read is the weakest of his novels. The characters aren't quite complex, in my opinion than the ones portraid in, for example, Kafka on the Shore or Colorless Tsukuru... The plot, moreover, isn't seductive enough, you sense the mistery but doesn't feel as compeled to reveal it as you do in other Murakani-san novels. But a good read indeed.
