About the Author
Kate L. Turabian (1893–1987) was the graduate school dissertation secretary at the University of Chicago from 1930 to 1958. She is also the author of The Student’s Guide to Writing College Papers. Wayne C. Booth (1921–2005) was the George M. Pullman Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago. His many books include The Rhetoric of Fiction and For the Love of It: Amateuring and Its Rivals. Gregory G. Colomb (1951–2011) was professor of English at the University of Virginia and the author of Designs on Truth: The Poetics of the Augustan Mock- Epic. He is coauthor, with Wayne C. Booth and Joseph M. Williams, of the best-selling guide The Craft of Research. Joseph M. Williams (1933–2008) was professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago and the author of Style: Toward Clarity and Grace.

8th edition is legit!!

I upgraded to the 8th edition after my 7th edition was completely worn out- too much use. The 8th is more concise and easy to use as well as includes more citation information for electronic sources, etc.

Required information in an awkward form (Kindle)

I purchased this edition of Turabian as a Kindle book. I own several earlier editions in paper but needed a more current one to match references from an editor. The update is good in terms addressing several modern reference techniques in bibliography and footnote format. But the Kindle edition is difficult to navigate to the extent that it is nearly useless. If you do not need to use Turabian, count yourself lucky. If you are forced to use it, then purchase a paper copy.

Hideyoshi—peasant turned general, military genius, and imperial regent of Japan—is the subject of an immense legendary literature. He is known, too, as an extravagant showman who rebuilt cities, erected a colossal statue of the Buddha, and entertained thousands of guests at tea parties. But his lasting contribution is as governor whose policies shaped the course of Japanese politics for almost three hundred years.

In Japan's first experiment with federal rule, Hideyoshi successfully unified two hundred local domains under a central authority. Berry explores the motives and forms of this new federalism which would survive in Japan until the mid– nineteenth century, as well as the philosophical question it raised: What is the proper role of government? This book reflects upon both the shifting political consciousness of the late sixteenth century and the legitimation rituals that were invoked to place change in a traditional context. It also reflects upon the architect of that change—a troubled parvenu who acted often with moderation and sometimes with explosive brutality.

Great academic treatise of Hideyoshi

For those who want to do some serious research of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, this is the book to read. This book provides detailed analysis of the politics and economic policies during Hideyoshi's era.

I found the federalism pursued by Hideyoshi very intriguing; while the local politics and ecomonics were taken care by the local warlords (Daimyos), Hideyoshi was the head-figure of Japan and had the authority to mobilized the military nationwide.

For those who likes to read 'general biographies', this might be a little too academic. This is not intended for a fun read. The military campaigns are summarized very well, but it does not provide a "I couldn't put it down" effect.

The deep historical research of this broad but unique topic of pre-modern oreintal political history is well written superbly researched, plainly stated and enjoyable. Hideyoshi's life is a class of hthe human experience irregardless of one's polical persuation or cultural beliefs. Every military, religious, politiacal and community leader should have to take a required courese in Japanese history. The key mark discussion subject should be Hideyoshi and this book as one of three main course texts.

She arranges the known corpus of Buddhist steles into broad chronological and regional groupings and analyzes not only their form and content but also the nexus of complex issues surrounding this art form―from cultural symbolism to the interrelations between religious doctrine and artistic expression, economic production, patronage, and the synthesis of native and foreign art styles. In her analysis of Buddhism’s dialogue with native traditions, Wong demonstrates how the Chinese artistic idiom planted the seeds for major achievements in figural and landscape arts in the ensuing Sui and Tang periods.

A Classic text on Chinese Steles

A stunning text that introduces the role Chinese and Buddhist steles have played in the history of religion in China. Exceedingly well-written and easy-to-understand with beautifully illustrated examples that are not only relevant but enable readers to explore for themselves the details and motifs of Chinese steles.

Professor Wong first introduces Chinese steles, describing their roots in marking spaces, as well as the various shapes and purposes steles served. Although a Chinese art form since the 1C CE, they then proved to be a valuable vehicle in the 5-6C for early Buddhist societies (yiyi) seeking a platform to express their devotion. Examples from Dunhuang, Maijishan, Luoyang, Datong, and other Buddhist centres illustrate the regional variations and emergence of Mahayana Buddhist motifs.

This is not a text for the lay reader but a very valuable reference work for any student interested in Chinese and/or Buddhist art. Wong has studied hundreds of steles and shares her findings generously throughout, giving us dates for the popularity of the "10,000 Buddha motif" (late 5C, early 6C), when the familiar Buddhist triads depicted began to enlarge to 5, 7, and 9 figures (mid-6C on), when the 'dual Buddhas' (Sakyamuni and Prabhutaratna) begin to appear together as described in the 11th chapter of the Lotus Sutra (470s), etc.

There are hundreds of volumes on Chinese paintings, sculpture, jade, gardens, furniture, but few that cover as thoroughly yet simply, professionally and eloquently their subject matter, as this excellent volume.

Larry Wall wrote Perl and he wrote Programming Perl. Better yet, he writes amusingly and well--all of which comes across in this latest edition of the definitive guide to the language.

Like Topsy, Perl just grew, and as a result the need for a third edition came about. It's now over 1,000 pages, which it needs to be, as it performs several different duties. First, it's an introduction to the Perl language for those who are new to programming; also, it's a guide for those who are coming from other languages; and, finally, it's a Perl language reference.

Among Larry Wall's other pursuits is being a linguist, and it's perhaps for this reason that Perl is a peculiarly flexible language with many routes to achieving the same ends, as the authors ably demonstrate. It's also extensible in several ways, designed to work with many other languages. Also, as it's largely interpreted, programs written in Perl tend to run unmodified on a variety of platforms--although platform-specific Perl modules and programming practices are also discussed.

A major strength of Programming Perl is the way subject areas are approached from several directions. This constant shift of viewpoint eliminates blind spots in the reader's understanding and provides a pleasing echo of the way Perl itself can take many routes from here to there.

About the Author

Larry Wall originally created Perl while a programmer at Unisys. He now works full time guiding the future development of the language as a researcher and developer at O'Reilly & Associates. Larry is known for his idiosyncratic and thought-provoking approach to programming, as well as for his groundbreaking contributions to the culture of free software programming. He is the principal author of the bestselling Programming Perl, known colloquially as "the Camel book."

Tom Christiansen is a freelance consultant specializing in Perl training and writing. After working for several years for TSR Hobbies (of Dungeons and Dragons fame), he set off for college where he spent a year in Spain and five in America, dabbling in music, linguistics, programming, and some half-dozen different spoken languages. Tom finally escaped UW-Madison with B.A.s in Spanish and computer science and an M.S. in computer science. He then spent five years at Convex as a jack-of-all-trades working on everything from system administration to utility and kernel development, with customer support and training thrown in for good measure. Tom also served two terms on the USENIX Association Board of directors. With over fifteen years' experience in UNIX system administration and programming, Tom presents seminars internationally. Living in the foothills above Boulder, Colorado, surrounded by mule deer, skunks, and the occasional mountain lion and black bear, Tom takes summers off for hiking, hacking, birding, music making, and gaming.

Watchout for the the Regular Expressions chapter though -- it seems like it goes forever

Warning! This book is very informative! They weren't lying, I am in the Threads chapter of this book now, and though dates, it gives me the historical mindset of the late 90's with detailed information about every fundamental aspect of Perl -- this book goes deep... Watchout for the the Regular Expressions chapter though -- it seems like it goes forever, but in the end, it's rewarding to type out a Perl example with a RegEx and have a better understanding on what's going on... I'm going to read the more current versions of this book later --- it's worth the struggle...

Is This a Reference, a Tutorial, or Not Quite Enough of Either?

I always like the Camel book but this book was mysterious in that
it gave TOO much info on many subjects and verged into being a
tutorial rather than a reference and often did not quite succeed at
being either. It's neither fish nor fowl.

Why 100+ pages on regular expressions given the excellence and
thoroughness of Friedl's book "Mastering Regular Expressions"?
Why data structures section given that this strays into the Cookbook's
domain but doesn't really go quite far enough to be a complete tutorial.

Other very, very important topics where the O'Reilly books are way, way
out of date (like the DBI book) aren't made up for by the Camel book.
Indeed, databases are scarcely mentioned much less covered. The
book also falls short by virtually not mentioning crucial directory-related
operations like recursive descent with FIle::Find. This subject is of vital
interest to sysadmins and QAs using Perl to make product build scripts
where movement around directories is at a premium.

This Camel is okay but, alas, like so many latter-day O'Reilly products,
it just doesn't measure up to its predecessors.

A book about the DBI, not programming databases from Perl.

This is a good book, IF:
- You want the online documentation with some extra fluff on databases, extra examples and the DBI spec. in one handy place (pages 187 - 333 are pretty much available online, the rest of the book is the online material filled out).
- You are interested in learning about the DBI, the book is about the DBI rather than database programming.
This is not a good book, IF:
- You want to learn how to program databases from the web (the widest application of Perl today is covered on one example/page and is an absolute joke).
- You want to learn how to program databases other than Oracle (the massive Windows market, and other markets are left to you, the reader, to extrapolate techniques from the book to practice).

This is a terrible book, IF:
- You are a Perl/programming beginner.
- You want to learn about databases.
- You want to troubleshoot your application (to not include much more driver specific material, when the DBI relies so heavily on the database's driver, means that essentially the book's use is very limited in the real world).
The DBI is a great tool in the Perl armoury; this book does not do it justice. You will learn more from the online documentation, DBI mailing list and the very generous Perl community than you could ever get from here - save your money (The forthcoming 'Web Databases with Perl' from Manning looks far more promising, but it's not out until Oct 2000).
Of course, if the book is supposed to be nothing more than a guide to the DBI in the very limited scope of being a recycle and slight expansion of existing material, then you can't fault it, and it is a nice read. A lot of the reviews for the book reflect this sentiment. However, if you are after more, you will end up questioning what O'Reilly were thinking. On these grounds three stars is generous.

"Susan M. Turley" is an experienced educator and practitioner in many areas of health care. She has worked in acute care, managed care, long-term care, and the physician's office and has held positions in nursing, quality management, infection control, medical assisting, medical transcription, and health information management.

As an educator, she has taught college and community college courses in pharmacology and pathophysiology. She has presented numerous staff inservices in acute care, managed care, and long-term care settings and co-presented numerous all-day seminars for teachers throughout the country. She codeveloped the curriculum and training materials for a nationally distributed medical transcription training program and currently works as a consultant in curriculum development and instructor for a distance learning school with health information management and medical transcription programs.

She is the author of numerous medical and educational articles for national journals, and co-author of two funded national healthcare grants.

She has a Master of Arts degree in adult education, a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, and national certification in the fields of health information management and medical transcription.

Her writing is well-known for its clarity in presenting technically difficult material and for a special blend of in-depth coverage that also includes humor and interesting anecdotes to keep interest high.
