I’m running out of synonyms for the word phenomenal

Twice now I’ve tried to sit down and write a decent review, the main reason I’ve struggled is that I’m running out of synonyms for the word phenomenal when describing Sarah Noffke’s books. I also have no idea how to convey the degree/amount of feelings running through my heart just thinking about what I experienced within the pages. It probably doesn’t help that I (once again) forgot about the extras at the back of the book and thought I had more chapters… THAT ENDING IS NOT OKAY. I’m not okay *ensue flailing* *dies*

As the second book in The Vagabond Circus Trilogy, Paralyzed sees everyone having to come to grips with the life altering death that broke our hearts in the first and let me tell you, it’s even more devastating now. Finley and Zuma have walls between them that take a lot to break down (including some hilarious but wounding banter). Jack was off being a suicidal idiot, only now I have a new appreciation for his character and would change that to ‘rightly emotional boy who needs a group hug with his friends’.

Then of course there’s the villain that makes me want to be physically violent. Get me in a room with Knight and I may not be able to take him down (the way he can torture minds doesn’t look pleasant) but I’ll have a lot of fun trying. Noffke might just have a little evil of the author kind in herself looking at how well she can tear a reader’s heart out, give them a beautiful beacon of hope and then rip it all away again. So you should definitely read her books ;) I look forward to crying with you.

The beginning of ‘Paralyzed’ sets a sombre mood, after the events of the first book, Suspended. Although it appears to be more of a continuation of its predecessor, Paralyzed is definitely set apart from Suspended. Even inclusive of the tragic ending to the first book, Paralyzed is far darker, the tone harsher, and with each new discovery, of the past, present or future, the members of the Vagabond Circus realise how blissful their ignorance truly was, as the weight of remorse lays heavily throughout. Unlike Suspended, where we were given a chance to adjust to the world of the Dream Travelers, Paralyzed grabs you by the throat, and doesn’t release you until you reach the final page, even then, left wondering how it all will end. With a devastating, shocking ending, the second installment of this Dream Travelling series is not a book that you can adequately prepare for, as the Vagabond Circus takes hit after hit, a subsequent series of disasters after the first blow of loss catalyses the events that next haunt the circus. Despite this, the members persevere as a dramatic story unfolds, another absolute master piece that I couldn’t even dream of putting down.
In true literary tragedy, a large number of ‘second’ books in series, and ‘sequel’ books don’t live up to the original, never mind the expectations set by the readers. Fortunately, this was definitely not the case for Paralyzed, keeping you on the edge of your seat, eager for the next line, next page, next chapter, until before you know it, it’s the next book you’re eagerly waiting for, as the final chapter peaks to presumably the climax of the story, and you are left wondering how the Vagabond Circus can possibly survive this.

A truly tantalizing follow up to the first book

The second book in the Vagabond Circus, Paralyzed, picks up where the first one left off. Their beloved ringmaster Dave is dead, murdered by one of Knight's kids, Sebastian. Finley, a former Knight's kid, failed in his duty to protect him, or did he? Was this meant to be? Possibly the start of something bigger? Either way, the show must go on. Titus is left to break the news to the rest of the circus, while struggling with how to carry on Dave's legacy. Jack has only one thing on his mind: revenge. He has decided to enter the belly of the beast and put an end to Knight. Zuma wants to go after Jack, to rescue him, but only Finley knows the location of Knight, so to do so she'll have to enlist his help. And only Finley knows what kind of evil Knight really is. Finley escaped him once, but if he goes with Zuma to rescue Jack, will he escape again, or will they all lose their freedoms, or worse, their lives?

Sarah Noffke is a true ringmaster in her own right as a storyteller. While her first book Suspended was a bit sluggish in the beginning, setting up all the characters and the background, This book took off from the beginning and was captivating from the start.

While there's a great many characters in this book, they all share a large amount of depth, and each have a rare uniqueness to them. Even the supporting characters, the ones that have very little written about them, are given personalities that are different from any other's within the book. Amazingly in this book, I think the stand out character is actually the villain. The author creates a villain so menacing and evil, while utilizing brilliant flashbacks, you cannot help but get chills reading about him. Sarah Noffke is extremely talented in writing characters that you can really care about.

The plot is staccato paced continuously leading up to a crescendo-ing climax. This is a very dark and intense story with a convoluted plot. There's so many twists and turns it's near impossible to even guess what's going to happen next. There's nothing I hate more than being able to figure out a book within the first few pages, and thankfully, that's not an issue here. Overall, this is an excellent installment in this series by a wonderful author, and I'm anxiously awaiting the 3rd book!

Very technical and not for lay readers, but very illuminating. Several of the chapters were life-changing for me, something I have been searching for for fifty years. Anyone with low self-esteem issues would benefit from the "core shame" chapter, if you can fathom the neuroscience. For that I recommend the audio CDs by Dr. Dan Siegel: "The Neurobiology of We".

Cozolino's work - still as well written and easy to read as its 2006 predecessor

This is the 2014 version of Dr. Cozolino's work - still as well written and easy to read as its 2006 predecessor. The big difference is more data driven material and up to date neuroscience and neurobiology. So how he was able to improve on it. This is an excellent read for graduate students and anyone who wants to have a thorough understanding of why we think therapy works and why people do what they do.

Really a one-of-a-kind book

The Neuroscience of Human Relationships is an in-depth book that sends a reader into the world of interpersonal neurobiology. Cozolino does an amazing job a huge amount of facts and even some well-founded theories to explain the ways people connect and the underlying "mechanics" of the brain that allow for successful connection. The book goes into great detail and connects ideas for a very solid experience of the information. The examples integrated throughout the text helped to provide an understanding and an application for a subject, a chance to see it in action. Some of the stories were touching, and all of them helped me to develop an understanding of what I was reading. I got the Kindle version, and it was very helpful to highlight important sections and to write down my thoughts on any given part. The writing style was engaging and kept me coming back to the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in human psychology. Not only do you learn about psychology, you also learn about the neuroscience behind it and how the two subjects are really connected, an apparently new revelation.

I will admit that some of the parts were kind of dry. I personally enjoy the behavioral and psychological discussions in the book, and, while learning about the parts of the brain that contribute to it was interesting, there were times when I decided to just skim over those parts. Fortunately, this does not detract from the fact that Cozolino really is a great writer. I will definitely be buying and reading his other books.

Coetzee (Waiting for the Barbarians) is one of South Africa's major novelists. In this collection of 26 essays, many of them first published in the New York Review of Books, he gives careful, fair-minded, and nuanced readings of many different authors. Coetzee is especially concerned and attentive to questions of translation and the craft of the novelist. Dutch authors (Marcellus Emants and Harry Mulisch) are insightfully covered, as are African authors (Nadine Gordimer and Breyten Breytenbach). The essays on European writers Rainer Maria Rilke, Franz Kafka, and Robert Musil and on Middle Eastern authors Aharon Appelfeld, Amos Oz, and Naguib Mahfouz reveal Coetzee's great insights in history, politics, and the relationships of literature to culture and society. Finally, a review of Noel Mostert's epic Frontiers powerfully depicts the harsh history of South Africa. Coetzee honestly states his agreements and differences with the authors he reviews. A Good Resource

This is, overall, an excellent book, and provides exemplary models of both the literary essay and sympathetic criticism. Coetzee also sets the bar at fluency in three languages.

The standout pieces are those focusing on T.S. Eliot, Gass's Rilke, Dostoevsky, and Turgenev. Overall, his treatments of German, South African, and Russian literatures are the strongest, and essays are grouped more or less by subject nationalities. There are also thematic threads running between pieces that give the book a sense of organization by chapter, rather than of separate works grouped together. Coetzee is careful to balance the strengths and weaknesses of each author, referring to collective works to find explanations when they are not readily available in the individual pieces. He is highly sympathetic with the process of writing a novel, and treats most of his subjects in light of this recognition.

Given all this, I was a little baffled when I came to his essay on Brodsky. Though he does acknowledge Brodsky's genius in the final paragraph, the piece as a whole feels like the expulsion of a long-held grudge against the writer. He thoroughly undermines Brodsky's philosophies and politics (whose identical characteristics he supports wholeheartedly when they appear in Borges' and Dostoevsky's works); and does so to the exclusion of an actual discussion of Brodsky's writing.

As a whole, however, this is an excellent collection. For those new to literary criticism, it brings a clear and unique insight to the evaluation of (and creation of) a novel's structure; and for those who are much more well-read in criticism, a clear respect for the author and a unique manipulation of a reader's curiosity and intelligence. I think that's enough caveats for one review:) I definitely recommend this book.

Superb and challenging

This book is very exceptional. Coetzee's literary criticisms are of the highest level. He discusses a very broad range of writers and books, including; Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe; Samuel Richardson's odd novel Clarissa; Cees Nooteboom's retelling of fairy tales; a critique of William Gass's critique of the poems of Rilke; the difficulty in translating Kafka; the novel The Man Without Qualities by Robert Musil, as well as Musil's Diaries published after his death; the most productive years of Dostoevsky; the essays (as well as career and poems) of Joseph Brodsky; a fantastic summary of the career and work of J.L. Borges; another penetrating essay on the serial works of A. S. Byatt; the novels of Caryl Phillips; the career of Salman Rushdie; a review of Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz's The Harafish; a fascinating essay on Daphne Rooke; an essay on Nadine Gordimer's advice to South African writers to look to the Russian intellectuals prior to the fall of Nicholas and Alexandria for resonance with current South Africa's dilema; and a wonderful essay on Doris Lessings life and work.

Coetzee is brilliant, I have loved his novels, but his literary critism is some of the most thought provoking essays I have read in years. This book is highly recommended.

Essays of the highest order

J. M. Coetzee delves deep into the (hidden) soul of the authors and their work reviewed in these splendid essays. Many novels are (or will become) `classics', in Coetzee's words, `works of art which retain meaning for succeeding ages and which continue to `live''.

Daniel Defoe is an author eclipsed by one of his creations (Robinson Crusoe).
The `Four Quartets' of T.S. Eliot are an attempt to give a historical backing for a radical conservative program for a Europe of nation-states with the Catholic Church as the principal supranational organization.
Samuel Richardson's `Clarissa' is a fight on two fronts. A social one: Clarissa is a member of a powerful family and bringing her down would bring down her family. A gender one: the virtue in women is not proof against the traitorous sexual desire which a skilful seducer can arouse.
Cees Nooteboom is an intelligent traveler, but nevertheless part of the tourism industry.
In `A posthumous confession', Marcellus Emants turns a confession of a worthless life into a work of art.
R.M. Rilke's doctrine excuses all sins except those against Art.
F. M. Dostoevsky conducts a searching interrogation of the `Reason of the Enlightenment'.
The eccentric J. Brodsky elevates prosody to metaphysical status. He despairs of politics and looks to literature for redemption.
For J.L. Borges, the poetic imagination enables the writer to join the universal creative principle. This principle has the nature of Will rather than Reason (Schopenhauer).
A. Oz escapes the intolerance and intransigence which have marred the public face of Israel.
N. Mahfouz's main concern is to link private virtue with civic justice.
D. Lessing explores the mystery of the self and the destiny it elects.
For N. Gordimer, the artist has a special calling. His art tells a truth transcending the truth of history. The goal of art is to transform society and reunite what has been put asunder.
B. Breytenbach's credo is to be against the norm, hegemony, the State and power.

These formidable essays contain also comments on the problems of translation (F. Kafka) and the media (the camera has no ideology: it will lie on behalf of whoever points it and presses the button.
Africa - a continent abused, exploited and patronized by foreigners - is still in the aftershock of colonialism. It is now confronted with hard choices between economic stagnation coupled with a fast rising birth rate or un-African Western science and technology, rationalism, materialism, the profit motive, the cult of the individual and the nuclear family.

and then we bought our six year old a beautiful wooden castle

We are trying to hold off as long as possible on our kids watching the movies. Despite our "no movie for kids up through age ___" (yet-to-be-determined) policy, the Star Wars bug bit our 6 year-old. The whole series is palatable and not-to-scary, with decent artwork (thank god no pictures of lego figures--where is the creativity in that?!). Our solution to staving off the movies, and then we bought our six year old a beautiful wooden castle. Now Luke and Han are knights for real.

devastating critique of the corrupt Roman Catholic church

Boettner has assembled a devastating critique of the utterly corrupt and fallacious Roman Catholic church. It's sad that Catholic reviewers are giving this work a 1 star rating and I bet they haven't even bothered reading the book! What are they so afraid of I wonder. It's the truth they're afraid of. They are terrified their precious religion will be exposed for the fraud it is. At the Council of Trent the Catholic church said one is condemned to Hell for believing that we are saved by faith alone (sola fide) which is what we Protestants believe. The entire Catholic church is a type of Anti-Christ system. It's very sad that nearly 1 billion people are following blindly this false religion. I pray someday their eyes will be finally open to the truth.

Some Catholic dogma which is wholly unsupported by Scripture:

belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist
baptismal regeneration
the Mass as a sacrifice
the special authority of the bishop of Rome
prayers for the dead
the perpetual virginity of Mary
the assumption of Mary
having ministers who don't marry (priests)
purgatory

The Catholic church doesn't want people to read and comprehend Scripture on their own because they might realize they've been lied to for so many years. For years the mass was said in Latin even though the congregations didn't know Latin. People were discouraged from reading Scripture on their own. Catholic apologists viciously attack the Protestant doctrine of Sola Scriptura because in that lies the seeds of their own destruction!

As a Catholic, I picked up this book in a book sale and gave it a read. This book is nothing more than a poorly researched and completely biased and unfounded attack on the Catholic Church. The lack of professionalism and hatred this author feels towards the Church founded by Jesus Christ is downright scandalous. This book isn't worth a dime. I threw my copy right into the shredder. Save yourself the money.
