Ellie Midwood continues her thrilling The Girl From Berlin trilogy with War Criminal’s Widow. As the Nazi regime is struggling to prolong its grip in Europe, the story of Annalise, her husband Heinrich, and her lover, Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner, the Chief of the Reich Main Security Office, continues. Annalise and Heinrich are German, working as counterintelligence agents for the American OSS office within the enemy organization. The Third Reich, while often viewed as a formidable organization where all members embraced one goal, is portrayed in a different light in this book. The personal misgivings and individual goals of the officers of the Third Reich lend to an understanding that even such a malevolent force is comprised of conflicted individuals, sometimes doubting its own organization’s goals. Finally, the war is over, Annalise and Heinrich’s last days in their native homeland are harrowing, while an escape is planned by the appreciative American OSS office.

Learning more about the inner workings of the Nazi regime within the triangular relationship of three main characters is certainly an engaging and intriguing process. The Girl From Berlin: War Criminal’s Widow by Ellie Midwood is a suspense-filled, page-turning historical novel with many twists and turns. Ms. Midwood is able to develop complex characters and shows that few people are all-good, or all-evil, especially when living in unusual circumstances. However, when the war ends, the consequences of previous actions remain. This is a thought-provoking novel about a very difficult time in the last century. A thought provoking page-turner

The story of "War Criminal's Widow" book 3 in the series The Girl from Berlin, highlights the skill of the author Ellie Midwood. Aspects of the series are sensitive, given they deal with war crimes. The dependence triangle of Annalise, her husband Heinrich, and Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner, the Chief of the Reich Main Security Office, creates a compelling and complex personal story of flawed individuals, told against a fascinating and spine-chilling background of the rise and fall of The Third Reich.

This final book in the series is set during the demise of The Third Reich and the aftermath. As Germany falls to the allies there is a search for justice and for an atonement from war criminals. Many escape from that justice. Excuses are made for the criminal actions of those engaged war crimes by those who stand by them at the end.

This is a page-turning, gripping account of what people in these types of situations are: neither all devil, just as the winners in war aren’t pure saint. Neither of the the opposing men, husband, and lover of Annalise are shown as a hero. That’s how life is. This story's merit is that it was never about showing a perfect world, a perfect love, in shows the truth of human nature and how we can be corrupted by love ann hatred. This is great story telling.

This novel left me thinking, not of the retribution still owed to Ernst, but of his son. Ernst junior. He is a child of a Jew and of one who contributed to the destruction of many Jews. What will the world hold for his future? Will he grow up obsessed by bigotry and hatred as his father did, love unwisely as does his mother, or is there a future that includes humanitarian attitudes ahead for him?

The concept for this series was brilliant, and the writing brought it to life. You cannot read this story without feeling emotion and being left affected by the story. A deserved five stars.

In this, the third book of the Girl From Berlin Series, Annalise finds herself in the final days of the second world war. Torn between her first love, husband Heinrich, and true love, lover Ernst, she has a front row seat as the Third Reich collapses. Her counter intelligence activities should have bought her safety from the forces closing in on Berlin, but that doesn’t keep her from despair when the city and all those she loves are in jeopardy.

I don’t envy the position Annalise finds herself in. To be balanced between the men she loves while watching what is left of her world fall apart, is heartbreaking. I touched on a point in an earlier review how not black and white the world is. The author has once again and more definitively shown how a war machine like the Nazis is made up of individuals that are simply trying to survive. No excuses are made for the horrors inflicted on the world, yet it is brought home clearly how easily good people can do bad things even in the name of doing good. The attention to detail is once again the finest point of the story. The reader feels what it was like to be trapped in a Berlin about to collapse at the end of a long war. The sacrifice of doing the right thing when it would be so easy to turn a blind eye was evocatively made clear.

I will admit the love story did not turn out the way I thought it should, but then that is why I am reading and Ellie Midwood is writing. It is a beautiful story full of nuance. The tale of the girl from Berlin and all the men who loved her is an instant classic.

Strap on your seatbelt! This is top notch writing!

I loved the first two books in this series and so I was hellbent on reading book three. My expectations were met and surpassed in every way. This is top notch story telling by a top notch author.

Before you begin reading strap on your seat belt. The story took me from nail biting tension in the first scene to moments of happiness and joy later into the story, and then, only halfway through the book, I was plunged into despair. Ms. Midwood had me in the palm of her hand as she toyed with my emotions and my heart rate was going up and down like a yo-yo. I was certain there would have to be a sad ending, because logically, how else could it end? Well, I was dead wrong, and glad of it. I never saw that ending coming. I'm still smiling at the huge twist.

Favorite character - Ernst Kaltenbrunner, and that's saying a lot, because I fell in love with Heinrich in book one.

Favorite scene - Ernst and Heinrich in the basement during the bombings getting drunk. What a scene! Close second is breakfast with Otto discussing sleeping arrangements. I won't say more and give away spoilers.

My only regret is to see this series come to an end...but wait! There another series about Ernst! OMG!

Sew Fun!

I was a disaster with needle and thread before reading this, and although this book is not a "how-to" for sewing, it does cover some basics. I recently got my first sewing machine and have been happy enough with the first three things I made (all from this book) that I gave them away as gifts (well liked!). That's a huge step forward!

The only thing I wish was different? Some of the creatures don't have patterns, you're supposed to free-hand draw them yourself. It takes some practice to get the size right to account for seam allowances, but it's not bad. That's why plush toys are so great.... there is a lot of room for imperfection. :) That said, if you're going to write a book, and include patterns, why not go all the way and include them for everything?

Otherwise, I love this book! I would also recommend Softies: Simple Instructions for 25 Plush Pals if you like fun and whimsical creatures.

Great and Fun book

I was so excited to get this book, and fortunately, was not disappointed when I did! I love the pictures, the instructions are easy, and considering I had no previous experience sewing or creature creating, it's easy to follow! I found this book through Jenny Harada's site, which I stumbled on quite by accident while searching through all things cute, and decided to give it a try! I wasn't pleased with ALL of the plushies detailed in the book, but the majority are winners. Definitely get this book if you're interested in getting started, or just being able to flip through it from time to time!

Imaginative and adventurous sewing, great projects to share with family ( mother/daughter projects). Quirky enough for preteens/teens and environmentally friendly, several projects are made with recycled clothing and/or materials. Anyone with a sense of humor would love one of these projects as a gift. The templates and ideas keep you thinking and planning more sewing projects. Great idea!!!!

About the Author
Auguste Escoffier (1946–1935) was a French chef considered to be the father of haute cuisine. Much of his culinary technique was a simplified and modernized version of Marie-Antoine Carême's elaborate style. Escoffier's 1903 text Le Guide Culinaire is still used as both a cookbook and a textbook today. He helped codify the five fundamental "mother sauces" of French cuisine: béchamel, espagnole, velouté, hollandaise, and tomate. Kaiser Wilhelm II called him the "Emperor of Chefs."

It's probably an abridged version

I do not how big or how many recipes the original Escoffier book has, but this one is most probably not the all-in version. As i read through the book, i somehow found myself loosing my way from one category to the other, not to mention that there are lists and indexes that are lacking basic data - which certainly Escoffier hadn't left out when he first wrote the book.

However, as a first contact with this great Chef, it's a good start buying this if you do not want to spend more for the full version. Just have in mind that - expect for the hard cover - the rest of the paper used for this version is of really low quality and very easy to be torn apart.

It was a waste of money to buy the Kindle version

DO NOT ORDER THE KINDLE VERSION!!!!! The book itself is enjoyable and I have several previous paperback editions. However this year I bought the Kindle version. The player tables, which are the heart of the book, are way too small to see on the Kindle. It was a waste of money to buy the Kindle version.

The BOOK form is great baseball "stuff". I've been reading Ron Shandler's publications for literally decades. The information is really written for people who play in fantasy leagues, but still a great read for the serious fan.

I've used countless fantasy baseball guides through the years, and this is by far the best. The statistics used in their models are explained in a very easy to understand manner. You can make some startlingly accurate predictions using their guide. I've been able to buy low on players who made great recoveries, or players who were ready to break out. Until I started using the guide, I was pretty inconsistent in the 10 and 12-team leagues I've played in. In the four years I've been using the guide, I've won my league once and came in the money three other times. What a difference.

About the Author
Anthony Bradley was Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Edinburgh before becoming a practising barrister in London. From 2002 to 2005 he was legal adviser to the House of Lords Committee on the Constitution. His publications include Janis, Kay and Bradley, European Human Rights Law: Text and Materials (3rd edition, 2008). Keith Ewing has been Professor of Public Law at King's College London since 1989, having taught previously at the Universities of Edinburgh and Cambridge. His books in the fields of civil liberties, electoral law and labour law include The Cost of Democracy (2007) and Bonfire of the Liberties (2010). Christopher Knight is a barrister at 11KBW Chambers who practises in public law. He has taught administrative law at Oxford and was a judicial assistant to the Justices of the Supreme Court in 2009-10. His publications include The New Tribunals Handbook (2011) and he is a contributor to The White Book.

He describes his decision to leave the navy to attend graduate school at Yale, as his colleagues in the submarine force are faced with a new morbid reality—an involuntary lottery for service in Iraq. And how, for the sake of his country, his naval forefathers, and his mother (who believed in cleaning up after one’s own messes), Brownfield is determined to do something good in the name of the United States.

Where to begin...

I have never before read a book where the author is so shamelessly self-promoting as Chris Brownfield. As another reviewer previously pointed out, his arrogance removes most (if not all) of his credibility, and makes this book very difficult to enjoy. For someone who was clearly not an outstanding JO (not by a long shot), he has way too much criticism and not enough respect for his fellow Navy submariners.

For a book titled "My Nuclear Family", Brownfield spends a lot of time talking about his IA in Iraq and his problems with the US government and the War on Terror. All organizations, particularly the US government has it's fair share of problems, however I hardly consider a sub JO an expert on politics or the intricacies of war. His claims that submarines are obsolete in today's Navy only further demonstrate his ignorance on the subjects.

I was led to read this book because I am quite familiar with the Navy's nuclear training pipeline and the job requirements of a submarine JO. As such, I was most interested in the first part of Brownfield's book which focuses on his time as a JO on the USS Hartford. It seems to me that Brownfield was a sub-standard officer at best, and is now a disgruntled ex-employee of the Navy who wanted to write a bitch-fest about how difficult his job had been while simultaneously making himself out to be the lone person deserving of respect in a profession he believes to be fallen.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. The officers currently serving in our sub force are an important part of our national defense and are very deserving of our respect and gratitude, despite what Brownfield thinks.

I Don't Trust This Man

I might as well say it straight out: I just don't trust this man. His book consists of a series of stories about his experiences in the US Navy, interspersed with expositions on the nature of war in general and the Iraq War in particular. The tone of both the stories and the expositions is one of unremitting arrogance. He's always the smartest guy in the room, and -- with a few notable exceptions -- everyone around him is incompetent, dishonest, or both. This attitude not only makes for some tortuous reading, it also undermines his credibility as an author. And credibility is everything for this book, because Brownfield makes some pretty damning claims about the U.S. Military without providing any evidence to back them up.

Now, perhaps these claims are all true. I have no illusions about the perfection of either our military or our political leadership, particularly during the Bush administration. But I need facts to back up the kinds of claims of incompetence Brownfield makes, not just opinions, and the author provides no evidence whatever that the events actually happened, much less in the contemptible, bumbling manner he describes. There are no footnotes in this book, no documentation of the events, no research -- just a series of stories and opinions. According to his introduction, he is revealing classified information and he's changed the names of all the people he belittles, so there's no way to check his facts, much less validate his opinions. All we have to go on is his word, and that's why personal credibility is so important to this book. Given the smug, self-serving tone of superiority that permeates the book, I find no compelling reason to believe his claims.

As to the lectures on war that break up the stories, they mostly state the obvious or rehash events that are much better covered in other books -- books that carefully document the inner workings of our military and the political manipulations that led to the invasion of Iraq (read Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2003 to 2005 if you really want the facts). But if there is anybody left on the planet who still thinks that Saddam Hussein was behind the 9/11 attacks, or that he really did have weapons of mass destruction, this author has nothing new to say to them.

I was hoping to learn something of value from this book, something that might help me understand why our country continues to have these terrible and costly military misadventures. All I learned from this book is that the author was always the smartest guy in the room. Or chose to believe that he was.

Black Sheep Writes About His Family

Christopher Brownfield was a substandard nuclear officer by his own admissions. He uses his weaknesses (non-technical major in a technical field and being a junior officer) to excuse unprofessionalism and the acceptance of low standards.

The guy who can barely pass his nuclear plant basic exams after over a year of training somehow (according to his writings) turns out to be the smartest, most ethical guy in the room on every occasion. Strange isn't it? Not so strange if you are the author of the book and have a huge ego and want to look back at your past and see everyone else to blame for anything that went wrong around you.

When Chris gets older and perhaps reaches maturity, he may look back on his time in the Navy and be ready to write a real tell all book about where he went wrong and let down all his bosses ... from the CO that he didn't save from running the Sub aground to the Iraqi's that he couldn't help protect or help get electrical power.

Yes, there are things beyond one's control, but Chris is a loser who makes excuses for his own shortcomings. It is obvious why "Jessica Rabbit" (a character in the book) dumped him. If he was a "doer" rather than a whiner, he would have had successes to write about.

I'm throwing my copy of his book away. It wasn't worth the $4 I paid for it.

Great book, ok bible study.

This is an excellent book. The chapters are really well written, lots of good examples. I will say after doing the Bible study that is in the back of the book with about 10 other ladies the questions seem to be a bit of an after thought. Great book, ok bible study.
