About the Author
Gavin Lewis received his Bachelor of Arts from Oxford University and his Ph.D. from Princeton University. His research and publications include studies of central European history, Sumerian civilization, Athenian politics and religion, print and culture in the Renaissance, and the decipherment of Egyptian writing. He has over thirty years' experience teaching Western civilization to undergraduates. He is the author of CHURCH AND PARTY IN POLITICAL CATHOLICISM: THE CLERGY AND THE CHRISTIAN SOCIAL PARTY IN LOWER AUSTRIA, 1887-1907; TOMS MASARYK; and CLOSE-UPS OF THE PAST: WESTERN CIVILIZATION IN CASE STUDIES.

Easy to read & understand

I purchased this textbook for my Western Civilizations II course. I thought this was a great textbook because it was not overly detailed, but provided enough information to increase my understanding of the subject. There were lots of visuals throughtout the book, which I found aided my learning. The maps were particularly helpful, as were the period photos. The text itself was presented in a simple, two-column format, with clearly defined headers and sub-headers for each section. The book featured text boxes with important terms and definitions, which was particularly helpful as I studied for my exams.

This textbook came with online access to CourseMate, but I did not use that feature and cannot review that aspect of the textbook.

Excellent read!

We're using this book for our world civ 1 & 2 classes at WSCC. It looks like it would be busy and a little sophomoric in its design but nothing could be further from the truth. The material is well written and concise and the cengage packet that comes along with the new versions of the textbook are amazingly detailed and well thought out; in addition to being great study aids. Great textbook for the class.

Ronald J. Tallarida holds a BS and MS in physics/mathematics and a Ph.D in pharmacology. His primary appointment is professor of pharmacology at Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. For more than 30 years, he also served as adjunct professor of biomedical engineering at Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, where he received the Lindback Award for distinguished teaching of mathematics. The Mark Evans Bonds' selection of musical scores in "Anthology of Scores," Books 1 and 2 are the accompaniment anthology for "A History of Music in Western Culture," Books 1 and 2. The entire series is a good choice for college/university instructors teaching the history of tonal music in a two-semester set of Music History courses. A companion set of CD's is also available; however, if expensive textbooks are a concern, most of the music in the text and anthology is easily found on YouTube. I would recommend the entire series: text, anthology and CD set.

Wow... I'm always amazed at how conservative Amazon is with their product descriptions. I ordered this book with my fingers crossed, but it arrived in truly pristine condition, and at a price $35 cheaper than my school bookstore. As for the book itself, it contains detailed scores, albeit with small print, with fairly brief but insightful comments following each piece. The accompanying CD set is extremely expensive, though, so I recommend just finding your own recordings or on YouTube to listen to.

Amazing, amusing, tragic and poignant all at the same time

As a 13 year old I can remember having to learn about Franz Ferdinand, The Black Hand Gang, allies and enemies, dates and times and other mundane facts that actually didn't mean much to me.

In contrast, this book would enthuse any Year 7 pupil (and in my case 40+) to do a GCSE in History or just be grateful for our freedom and the fact that we can read a book like this!

Very interesting book for the teen age boys in our life. They are fascinated with the details of history and oh by the way they actually learn history from this book. There are many books in this series all of them are very helpful to encouraging reading by teenage men.

great overview

It's a good book describing briefly all commodities and some of the critical information needed to trade them. I am an Agricultural Producer and the areas that involve those commodities are very short in comparison to the other commodities and don't provide any real specific or detailed information.

I would recommend the book to any one interested in trading any commodity but ag commodities, because it is too brief on this subject.

Appreciate the author for writing such a great book for dummies like me on commodities.

Few pros:
1. Simple real life examples on call and put options (future contracts) helped me understand the concept in couple of hours. I was trying to understanding this concept for a week atleast.

2. Flow of the books is really good, you feel like not to leave the book in between.

3. Best to read from start to finish on multiple days with appropriate gaps in between. (If you are too busy !). A great book for week end study.

Very helpful Guide for Traders

I'm an active trader and found this book packed with helpful information. For one, the author doesn't simply rehash old cliches about commodities but does an outstanding job of bringing to light new concepts and ideas that are helping improve my trading strategy every day. This book taught me how to analyze the fundamental drivers of the oil and gold markets, which has allowed me to develop my trading style for the long term. I really enjoyed the breakdown of the gold markets, and went long when the author recommended people start buying gold when it was at $650/oz; it's now at over $1200 and I'm very happy with my trade! Just an awesome book if you want to dig deeper into the markets without getting stuck in all the jargon. Highly recommended!

About the Author

These are wonderful short stories. I think it is harder to write short stories because everything has to come together and be interesting, exciting, meaningful so quickly. L'Amour is a master of the western but also of the short story. Authors of any genre should study him. Very subtle, very powerful, great fun.
