The Taylor Guitar Book: 40 Years of Great American Flattops, by Teja Gerken

(Book). Growing from a small custom shop in the early 1970s to the only new brand to have challenged the traditional Big Three of American acoustic guitars (Gibson, Guild, and Martin), Taylor has effectively changed the marketplace for acoustic steel-string guitars and influenced every other maker of acoustic stringed instruments. But Taylor's influence in the guitar market goes far beyond the guitars themselves. Having pioneered the use of modern building techniques such as utilizing CNC machines, UV-finishing, etc. the company has been an undisputed leader when it comes to innovation. Taylor's latest efforts are concentrated on wood conservation, and again, the company is setting the example that the industry is following. The Taylor Guitar Book combines a historical story line with useful hands-on information about model changes over the years to help readers learn how to identify and date a Taylor and features shop and factory photos (both historical and current) as well as full-color images of guitars.

Review
''Neil Young, Jason Mraz, Damon Albarn, Zac Brown and Dave Matthews are among the many musicians who play Taylor guitars. Now the story of Taylor Guitars (based in San Diego, CA) is revealed via the wonderful Teja Gerken-penned ''The Taylor Guitar Book.'' Founded in 1974 (long after companies such as Gibson, Fender, Guild, Martin and Rickenbacker had seemingly cornered the market), Taylor has grown to be among the leaders of the industry while attracting the loyalty of guitarists around the globe. This colorfully-illustrated 160-page book will appeal to both casual and hardcore fans of Taylor-made acoustic and electric instruments.'' --Music News Nashville

''For the Taylor Guitar enthusiast 'The Taylor Guitar Book' will provide the history behind the guitars they play and cherish. Teja Gerken's extensive knowledge of Taylor Instruments, history, and culture has created a profound book.'' --Maverick Magazine

Full study of an exceptional company
By W. R. Smith
One of the biggest stories in the guitar world in recent decades is the rise of Taylor Guitars. Formed by two young San Diego visionaries, Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug, in 1974, Taylor Guitars in just four decades has gone from a small workshop to a position of prominence in the industry. The company has pioneered a number of important innovations in both its instruments and production processes, all while expanding its output and maintaining a reputation for quality. Taylor now stands as the largest domestic guitar producer, with about 700 guitars completed per day. As the company recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, it called on Teja Gerken, a music journalist and guitarist, to document this impressive rise. In a clear, fluid style, this book draws on extensive interviews with Taylor, Listug, and other important figures. Their stories, along with the author's own analysis and insights, are beautifully complemented with many photos drawn from the Taylor archives. A critical, warts-and-all history, this book is not, but that does not detract from its quality. Until a 50th anniversary edition of the company's history is published, as it no doubt will be, this book will likely be the standard reference for all things Taylor. Anyone interested in the history of the American acoustic guitar will find this book of great interest.

A fine piece of research and writing
By W. R. Smith
A fine piece of research and writing, including revealing interviews with several of the company's principals. Great visuals as well. A more than worthy successor to Michael John Simmons, Taylor Guitars 30 Years of a New American Classic (2004). Gerken's book will no doubt stand as the standard reference on this innovative company at least until its golden (50th) anniversary rolls around.

Julian SchnabelFrom Brand: Skira

Julian Schnabel (b. 1951) is regarded throughout the world as one of the most important artists of our time. He burst onto the neo-expressionist art scene of the early 1980s with huge, arresting paintings on collaged shards of smashed plates, but is probably best known today as a successful filmmaker. His works combine oil painting and collage techniques, classical pictorial elements inspired by historical art, and neo-expressionist features. This volume provides a precise account of Julian Schnabel's artistic output over the last thirty years, describing the personality of a metamorphic and unpredictable artist and his bold, somewhat confrontational style reminiscent of the energy and daring of Picasso and Pollock. From the broken-plate paintings that brought him fame, to the recent, massively scaled Big Girls series, the artist's work is set in the context of his overall sensibility, becoming part of an ongoing pictorial diary of a life.

From Publishers Weekly
Before he became known globally for his work as a filmmaker (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), Julian Schnabel was a painter of works sometimes as large as a movie screen. Although a book cannot replicate the experience of seeing these paintings in person, the book spreads the nearly 200 reproductions generously over its thick glossy pages, each receiving a double-page spread, captioned with just title and date. To give a sense of scale, the book occasionally interrupts a series of paintings with a photograph of the work in location. Eight short essays rush to the defense of their subject, so that his early success with collectors and in the medium of film doesn't tarnish reception of his work. Painter David Salle writes: What set his work apart was his use of fragmented, physically demanding surface, which gave his vision of free association a kind of flickering, tentative quality that insists on the materiality of the painting. An expanded time line at the end of the book does the work of biography while the essays provide segues into the work itself: an interview with Schnabel, a meditation on experience by William Gaddis, a survey of Schnabel's monumental surfing paintings and more. A Monograph in Keeping with a Prodigious Artist's Gifts
By Grady Harp
JULIAN SCHNABEL is a very large scale, hefty book about a hefty artist whose brilliance and contributions to the art world is equally as large - and important. Many people judged his early paintings that incorporated Melmac plates and shards as works that were thumbing his nose at the art world. But following the progress of this artist, that first impression could not have been further from the truth. From the gradual changes in his paintings and the growing sophistication of his exhibitions to the fine films he has created (Before Night Falls, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Basquiat, Lou Reed's Berlin) to the current integration of photography and painting - all make strong statements both visually and philosophically.

Schnabel is never less than interesting, even to the toughest of critics. This very excellent book edited by David Moos (and Schnabel!), and with informative essays by Gian Enzo Sperone and Marco Voena covers the spectrum of Schnabel's life from his birth in 1951 to the present. Even the most devoted fan of his artistic output will be impressed with the photographs of exhibitions - with comments scrawled across the pages from Schnabel himself - and with the newest works, including the girls with no eyes series and the stunning Japanese paintings of wispy floating multifaceted figures suspended above an aqueous matrix.

Though there have been many books published about this amazingly gifted artist, few are as complete as this. The quality of reproductions and the depth of information would be difficult to match. A collector item in book form. Grady Harp, July 09

a book about an art work we have to think about
By Thiago Ribeiro
I bought this book because the is something intellectually exciting in Schnabel's work. Certainly we have something to learn about his paintings. Schnabel goes beyond all the rules we learned about what is and not is art, what can be and can not be done in art. This beautiful and well designed book has a hundred and more great reproductions of his paintings so we can follow his highly personal artistic output. There is some essays too that try, with some success, to shed a light on this unique artistic thought. I recommend specially the reading the texts by David Moos, David Moos & Bruce Fergunson, and David Salle. There is also a very good interview, produced by David Moos & Louise Neri, with the artist exposing his thoughts and beliefs on painting. We may agree or not with him, understand or not, but it's a way to get closer to this powerful art maker.

Mother Teresa was one of the most revered women of the 20th century. Adored by millions, her Missionaries of Charity organization aided thousands of poor, sick, orphaned, and dying individuals in Calcutta, India, and she was beatified by the Catholic Church in 2003 for her ministry. Originally published in 1971, this heartfelt biography first brought Mother Teresa’s works and spirit to the attention of the western world. It features transcripts of conversations with Mother Teresa as well as a bevy of photographs illustrating her life-long role as a humanitarian. Wonderfully intimate and touching, this is an inspirational look at one of history’s most beloved and giving individuals.

This book is truly beautiful
By DAVID-LEONARD WILLIS
This book is expressly concerned with the work Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity do together in Calcutta and elsewhere for the poorest of the poor, written by a man who worked for many years in the same city and who much admired her work. It is full of anecdotes about her life and work and provides a pretty good summary of the major events. We know Mother Teresa for the great love that she poured out on the poor but at the very heart of all she did was her great love for God. "Yet not I, but Christ liveth in me" was one of her favorite sayings. Yet Muggeridge had never met anyone less sentimental, less scatty, more down-to-earth. Mother Teresa took a very practical view of money as her needs grew. When the Pope visited India he presented her with his white ceremonial motor car but she never so much as took a ride in it, organizing a raffle and raising enough money to start her leper colony.
The author tells us that while teaching Mother Teresa received her call within a call - to work with the poorest of the poor rather than in her Loreto school convent with its pleasant garden, eager schoolgirls, congenial colleagues and rewarding work. When her release came, she stepped out with a few rupees in her pocket, made her way to the poorest, wretchedest part of the city, found a lodging there, gathered together a few abandoned children and began her ministry of love. To choose, as Mother Teresa did, to live in the slums of Calcutta, amidst all the dirt, disease and misery, signified a spirit so indomitable, a faith so intractable, a love so abounding, that the writer felt abashed.
Following the instructions of her Lord, Mother Teresa regarded every derelict left to die in the streets as Him; she heard every cry of abandoned children, even the tiny squeak of the discarded foetus, as the cry of the Bethlehem child; she recognized in every Leper's stumps the hands which once touched sightless eyes and made them see. What the poor needed, Mother Teresa was fond of saying, even more than food and clothing and shelter (though they need these, too, and desperately) is to be wanted. It is the outcast state their poverty imposes upon them that is the most agonizing. She had a place in her heart for them all. To her, they were all children of God, for whom Christ died. The author never experienced so perfect a sense of human equality as with Mother Teresa among her poor. Her love for them made them equal, as brothers and sisters within a family are equal. This is the only equality there is on earth, and it cannot be embodied in laws, enforced by coercion, or promoted by protest and upheaval, deriving, as it does, from God's love, which, like the rain from heaven, falls on the just and the unjust, on the rich and poor, alike. The nuns all eat the same food, wear the same clothes, and possess as little as their clients - the poorest of the poor. The nuns are not permitted to have a fan or any other mitigations of life in Bengal's sweltering heat. Even at prayers, the clamor and discordance of the street outside intrude, lest they should forget why they are there and where they belong.
Critics point out that statistically speaking Mother Teresa and the sisters achieved little but in Muggeridge's view Christianity is not a statistical view of life. Welfare is for a purpose while love is for a person. The one is about numbers while the other is about a person who is also God. The God Mother Teresa worships cannot see a sparrow fall to the ground without concern.

I found Malcom Muggeridge's portrayal of Mother Teresa penetrating, very helpful and in a small volume you receive a good idea of the woman who may well be recognized as a saint during our lifetime. Sadly, some of our churches appeal to only a small congregation; for someone concerned with why their message is not getting over as effectively as they might wish, there could be no better way than studying this book and learning more about Mother Teresa's way of expressing love.
This book is truly something beautiful

Truly Beautiful
By William Krischke
This really isn't a biography of Mother Teresa so much as it is a document in reflection on one man's encounters with her. Mother Teresa is such a dynamic and profound personality, indeed so much a reflection of her Savior, that just meeting her has inspired much reflection, conviction, and devotion in the mind and heart of Malcolm Muggeridge. She is that rare persona who somehow ascends past celebrity status. Celebrities, in the end, are entertainment. Mother Teresa's presence and personality are much more than entertainment: with hardly a word she challenges and changes people. The best parts of this book have more to do with Muggeridge's inner searching than with Teresa's life and work.
I'm sure that she would shy away from all this praise. Yet truly she is a reflection of her Savior, which is her heart's desire. This strange and unearthly power she has to affect lives with nothing more than her presence perhaps can help us understand how an illiterate carpenter from the backwaters of the world managed to split history in half and utterly turn the world upside down. When you draw near to God, even just a reflection of Him, you cannot help but be changed.
What I love most about Mother Teresa, what inspires and challenges me the most, is her ability, maybe even insistence, in seeing Christ in the poor and destitute that she cared for. He said `whatsoever you do unto the least of these, you do unto me' and she takes it seriously -- and the result is beautiful beyond comparison. It makes my heart leap.
Thank you, Lord, for sending us a woman like your servant Teresa to remind us of your face, your call, and your love. We are eternally grateful.

The Beauty of God in a Nun
By Xavier Thelakkatt
Among the hundreds of books written on Mother Teresa and her ministry, this is one of the earliest and the best. It has the very words of Mother Teresa with regard to her life, vocation and apostolate. The photographs and interviews included in the book make the portrayal of this nun and her work almost complete. Making a TV program about her and writing this book, were life-changing experiences for Malcolm Muggeridge. For someone planning to learn about Mother Teresa this may be the book to begin with.

The First Guardian (The Seraphim Saga) (Volume 2), by Jennifer Rehnay

After five years of oblivion, Gabriel, the disgraced Archangel of Armageddon, wakes up trapped inside the mind of a human child. Her name is Evey and she looks just like him. For reasons he can't understand, he finds he is incapable of telling her who or what he really is. Worse still, Gabriel discovers his Light has been merged with hers, binding them together until old age or misfortune brings Evey death—and when Evey dies, Gabriel will die. Though Gabriel hates his human for her humanity, he is drawn to her against his will. So, for the next twenty-two years, Gabriel indoctrinates Evey with his vicious, revolutionary ideals, and raises her to be his faithful follower.

Sataniel had little impact on Earth as the Fallen One, but as a seraph, the dragon-fanged bearer of Sol discovers he has the ability to possess humans. In his single-minded pursuit to end Gabriel for all time, Sataniel transforms human bodies into his own, though it kills his human hosts in the process.

Neither seraph nor archangel could have anticipated the steps Evey would take to save herself and the abusive celestial she adores. Evey loves Gabriel with her free will and gives him her Light, unleashing the archangel in all his destructive glory as a god on Earth.

Once again, Gabriel finds himself powerful enough to change the Creator’s order of things, but this time he isn't ready. After two decades spent inside human consciousness, the archangel has developed a terrible weakness...

Evey.

Rethink Redemption
By Alisha D Ashley
In this follow up to "The Last Seraph," the roles are reversed. Villains become heroes and heroes fall (again). "The First Guardian" is a fast, dark, often hilarious book. There are some wonderfully wrought new characters here that I fell in love with (Dexter is my favorite). It's an edgy book, in the sense that some of the action has very sharp edges that will stick with you. You won't forget what happens in the basement, for instance. Generally speaking, Rehnay's action sequences are gorgeous and intense. As with Rehnay's previous book, the dialogue is excellent and will make you laugh out loud. It will make you rethink what you know about redemption stories. Highly recommended.

Another good one by Ms. Rehnay
By Paul
This book is a great read. Evey is a unique young woman who communicates with a character in her head she has named Ghost. She is in love with Ghost and suddenly one day he appears on earth. She finds out he is the archangel Gabriel who is destined to be paired with her. Evey and her best friend get involved trying to save Gabriel from his nemesis Sataniel. The antics and chaos are sometimes chilling, sometimes hilarious, and always colorful and exciting. This author has put together her second book about the great Creator, the Last Seraph and the archangels who inhabit their domain. She is a great storyteller who I hope will keep bringing these characters to us in future books.

By Kristine
An amazing second book in 'The Seraphim Saga' by Jennifer Rehnay! The reader finds themselves relating to Evey and feeling afraid of Gabriel, with the shocks of Sataniel and the humor of Alexiel blending wonderfully to make a thrilling story. I could barely put the book down! Highly recommended to those who read the first book and to those who haven't - START! This is a beautifully written series that captivates the imagination, stirs a spectrum of emotions throughout the pages, and will make you want to read it again!

The wettability of oil reservoirs is the most important factor controlling the rate of oil recovery, providing a profound effect on petroleum production. The petroleum industry has increased the research effort on wettability, but, so far, there has never been a comprehensive book on the topic. This is the first book to go through all of the major research and applications on wettability, capillary pressure and improved recovery. Critical topics including core preservation, the effect of wettability on relative permeability, surface forces such as van der Waals equation of state, petroleum traps and pore size effects are all included in this musthave handbook. Deciphering the techniques and examples will increase the efficiency and production of oil recovery, translating to stronger reservoir simulations and improved well production.

Is There No Place on Earth for Me?, by Susan Sheehan

This renowned journalist's classic Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation of schizophrenia—now reissued with a new postscript—follows a flamboyant and fiercely intelligent young woman as she struggles in the throes of mental illness.

“Sylvia Frumkin” was born in 1948 and began showing signs of schizophrenia in her teens. She spent the next seventeen years in and out of mental institutions. In 1978, reporter Susan Sheehan took an interest in her and, for more than two years, became immersed in her life: talking with her, listening to her monologues, sitting in on consultations with doctors—even, for a period, sleeping in the bed next to her in a psychiatric center. With Sheehan, we become witness to Sylvia’s plight: her psychotic episodes, the medical struggle to control her symptoms, and the overburdened hospitals that, more often than not, she was obliged to call home. The resulting book, first published in 1982, was hailed as an extraordinary achievement: harrowing, humanizing, moving, and bitingly funny. Now, some two decades later, Is There No Place on Earth for Me? continues to set the standard for accounts of mental illness.

Heartbreaking but often hilarious
By SOBnola
I've read and re-read Is There No Place on Earth for Me at least a dozen times since it's publication. I bought a new copy when I couldn't find the first (after Hurricane Katrina it was easy to forget what was lost and what was saved). I have 2 paperback copies and now the Kindle edition, which was updated by Sheehan and makes it worth the purchase.

Sylvia Frumkin is one of the most irritating, obnoxious, imperious, often (unintentionally) hysterically funny, and tragic people I've ever read about, including fictional characters. The book covers some of her childhood and troubled adolescence, when her first major psychotic break occurrs, and describes the endless cycle of hospitalizations which consumed the rest of her life. Through her journey we learn a great deal about the history of treatment of mental illness in the USA (especially New York state, where she lived and died) and witness her futile struggles to accomplish goals most adults take for granted, like having an apartment and a job.

Some reviewers stated they learned more than they wanted to know about mental health treatment and facilities and Sheehan is very thorough in that regard, but she provides a broader understanding without losing focus on one individual's fate. It's painfully clear Frumkin, and too many others, might have had a slightly easier time if the numerous psychiatrists who treated her had paid attention to her history, especially with medications. The background information shows how the landscape changed over the years, as more foreign, non-English speaking psychiatrists took jobs in state institutions because U.S. doctors could find better-paying jobs elsewhere. This is crucial to understanding some of the problems Frumkin and others deal with as they are misdiagnosed or simply unable to communicate adequately with someone who doesn't speak/understand English sufficiently and lacks cultural familiarity with a foreign country (i.e., the USA). One doctor diagnoses her as manic-depressive because he doesn't realize her wild references to Mary Poppins and other fictional and real people demonstrate typical schizophrenic symptoms.

What's more disturbing is the almost whimsical way her medications are prescribed and administered. Under-dosing occurs constantly, failing to note which drugs and doses are more beneficial, and inexplicably lowering doses or switching to another drug without compensating for the dosing requirements/adjustments between the two contribute to Sylvia's problems instead of helping them.

Sheehan's unflinching portrayal of the Frumkin family shows the agony of living with a deeply troubled child/sibling while demonstrating how much her parents contribute to her problems. Mrs. Frumkin is too self-involved to realize the antagonistic remarks she frequently makes to Sylvia only make the situation worse and Mr. Frumkin lives in a constant state of denial that blinds him to the fact his daughter will never be "well." Joyce, Sylvia's older sister, is the most sympathetic family member but she cannot curb her parents' behavior any more than she can control Sylvia, and she has her own demons to battle (almost entirely due to Mr. Frumkin's treatment of her from childhood as an overachiever, never quite meeting his expectations).

There is so much more I haven't covered I could write 20 pages and still not be done. It is often funny as hell due to Sylvia's absurd behavior (at times obviously meant to draw others' attention) and particularly non-stop monologues that juxtapose references to her real life, hallucinatory thoughts, and a cast of characters from Paul McCartney to Captain Kangaroo to the "best friend" she ever had, Camilla Costello, "Abbott and Costello's daughter."

Is There No Place on Earth for Me is exceptional and one of the most moving and enlightening books about schizophrenia, and mental illness treatment, I've ever read. That I frequently laugh out loud probably explains why I can re-read it again and again.

This book should be required reading for all psychiatry residents. I am a professor of psychiatry and read this on the recommendation of my own therapist. I just bought four copies to give to the residents I supervise.
This is the story of a patient with schizophrenia, who has spent her life in and out of a state hospital in New York. The author brings the patient, Sylvia, to vibrant life by actually living with her in the hospital. The Pulitzer was well deserved.

There is no place for the broken
By Mickey Robinson
Couldn't put it down. Brings to light the shameful way we treat mental illness and the patients who suffer with mental illness. It seems to be America's shame; hide the problem and hide the patient. Then add insult to injury and throw random medications at the problem. The patients are treated as sub-human by their primary caregivers who are usually the dis-enfranchised, poorly educated working class. The hierarchy the mental health wards establish makes everyone a victim with little or no access to resources they need to survive.

Good for command line lookup.
By Kahntraddiction
As the title states, if you have questions about certain commands you can easily look them up in this little guide.

Only complaint is that (and again with ciscopress) they don't offer you a digital copy. There are other companies that give you a CD loaded with FREE extra content and a PDF copy of the book.

Good Quick Command Reference
By Nathan Gilliam, VCP
This book has been a great easy reference for learning Cisco switch commands during a new datacenter project. It's well organized by function. As an improvement, I would suggest expanding on real-world syntax examples.

Good content, terrible Kindle format
By Downingtown
The Kindle version of this book has every single table of commands formatted as an image, and not text. That means it cannot be scaled, and reading the book on a PC results in very difficult to read tables. The tables are the real content of the book - ALL of the commands reside in these tables, and not a single bit of it is formatted as text. Other books in this series, like CCNA Portable Command Guide, have at least the vast majority of tables formatted as scalable text. This book is almost entirely image-based. Hopefully this will be changed in an updated version.
