the possibility of "Life Extension" beyond Obamacare

This book was touted on the national television show, The Merve Griffin (sp?) Show about 1983. I have purchased it several times since my first reading. It has been given it to every doctor I have seen since then and to several friends and relatives. Luckily several million copies have been printed so used ones at Amazon.com are readily available. About once a month The Dr. Oz Show with have a guest doctor on with "cutting edge" or "latest greatest" medical science that is a meer reflection or totally plagerized rewrite of what Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw compiled more than thirty years ago. At 585 pages the book might seem too long and weighty to begin but the two "hippie" scientists who wrote it have enough humour and reflection throughout so as to make it enjoyable. Today I just go to the index to brush up on what they wrote whenever I hear something familiar on Dr Oz's show or the Doctor's or some other television medical program. How correct and far sighted they are is note worthy.

I think in taking high dose water soluble vitamins it may eventually cause problems for the body like they found out for Vitamin b-6. But Durk and Sandra have liver and kidney function tests to hopefully spot any problems. Excess b-6 which is water soluble causes a loss of nerve sensation in hands which is reversible if discontinued at very high doses (like two thousand milligrams a day).

Beautiful book
By memories
I bought this book because I had picked up a nice piece that was marked by this maker and I needed to identify it. The book is pricey but it has lots of beautiful pictures and good information. I did not find my exact piece but I did find the pattern so it was very helpful. It has good information which tells you how to date the piece by decoding the mark on the bottom. I may not use this book much as these pieces are not easy to find but I WILL look at this book many times!

A more accurate subtitle for Peterson's book might be The Origins of Modern Cooking with Some Digressions into Matters Alchemical and Neoplatonic. The bulk of the book is given over to rehearsing Medieval Europe's culinary appropriations from the Middle East (saffron, rose water) and Renaissance Europe's rediscovery of classical foodstuffs (fungi, oysters, artichokes). If not terribly new, this is perfectly enjoyable reading. The bigger problem comes in what is new. Peterson believes that a taste for highly spiced, golden food flavored with sugar and colored with saffron was undone by the fall from favor of mystical neoplatonism in France. While this may have been a factor, she fails to address other, simpler explanations. When discussing the decline of saffron in 17th-century French cookery, she does not address the simple social explanation that a recent glut of domestic saffron had made the spice too common for high tables. She notes, "A number of 17th-century still lifes show small white bumpy objects in a variety of shapes. These are seeds or sticks coated with minerals from a hot spring. The metamorphosis of these objects into 'stones'... fascinated the alchemical adept." But she never explains why she dismisses the more common identification of these "white bumpy objects" as sugared almonds and candied fruit. Peterson unfortunately replaces Ockham's razor with a butter knife.

This is, first and foremost, a scholarly historical work. Beginning with an overview of the Middle East's culinary influence on Western Europe, scholar Peterson traces eating trends (essentially from sweet to salty) through the alchemical and sensual Middle Ages and the scientific Renaissance. She fixes France as Europe's gastronomical mentor by 1651 and from then on describes in depth the evolution of French cuisine and its influence on modern cooking. Ancient recipes and illustrations of paintings and manuscripts decorate the text. The book is loaded with footnotes from primary sources such as Pliny, Avicenna, and Robert Burton, author of The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621) and perhaps the first modern proponent of the Twinkie defense. Although the topic is rather academic, this book is not intimidating. By choosing to delve deeply into this esoteric subject, we can savor tidbits of information about astrology, the Reformation, and today's good life. Highly recommended.

Excellent Overview

I've had this book for years, and have purchased it for several friends interested in historical cookery. The first two chapters are especially useful in understanding the differences in the underpinnings of Medieval Cuisine, and the differences between it, and the cuisine that replaced it, leading into the 'modern' palate.

If you're interested in Medieval cookery, these two chapters make this book a worthwhile investment.

If you are interested in the history of French cuisine in particular, and European cuisine in general, this books is useful and interesting. It's bibliography is also very useful. It's writing style is good, and it presents interesting material well. Excellent reference.

Great Book for beginners

I got this book from Amazon. I specially wanted the SATB format of music the songs. But I was very much impressed with the chord signatures given in this book. I am learning a lot with this book. I also wanted many new songs. This has lot of new songs. Overall I am very happy with this book. I am very happy with Amazon in all the past transactions. Specially from a country like India, where we do not have access to such literature, I buy from Amazon. The products gets delievered with good safe packaging and at the earliest possible time.

Big Book of Christmas Songs - Violin has entirely different songs and appears to be music for solo violin (melody line only). *Big Book of Christmas Songs - Piano-Vocal-Guitar* is an extensive collection which includes many of the best and most-often-sung carols, as well as quite a few lesser-known favorites not typically found in other books. There are familiar and not-so-familiar traditional Christmas songs from around the world... Welsh, English, Hungarian, Polish, German, Venezuelan, Czech, Catalonian... just to name a few! While many of us might want to skip over some of the unknown songs, it is priceless to have available Christmas music from one's own heritage. Older French members of my family remember singing "Il Est Ne, Le Divin Enfant" as children; this carol has become a highlight of our little musical gathering on Christmas night. I imagine that those songs which are unfamiliar to me are equally cherished in some other home at Christmas. They are beautiful as well and I hope to learn more of them. Even if we do not end up using all of the selections, I'm still happy that they are there for someone else and do not feel shortchanged at all. This book has so many good carols and hard-to-find carols all in one place. I believe it is a great value.

Richard Kearney's philosophical approach to the question of imagination takes into account the related disciplines of history, sociology, political economy, theology, art, and art criticism. He investigates the concepts of imagination as they appear in the Hebraic and Greek traditions and as they emerged through the medieval, modern, and postmodern periods of our cultural history. This historical inquiry gives a context to his insightful articulation of the postmodern time and the concept of a creative imagination as a passing illusion of the western humanist, consumer, capitalist culture. He proposes the possibility of a postmodern imagination capable of preserving the functions of narrative identity and creativity - or what he calls the poetics of the possible.This includes a response to the postmodern dilemma with a reinterpretation of the role of imagination as a relationship between the self and other, a democratization of knowledge and culture, as ethically and poetically attuned to the lost narrative of historical meaning,and as inclusive, empathetic, versatile, open minded, and diversive. This book is a vital, intellegent analysis and guide for creativity, art, and imagination in our present postmodern culture.

this works a lot better that you would think it would

Standard 40K Grimdark war porn with an original twist followed by a standard 40k gimmick. The Necrons make a Death Star (interestingly described, but yeah, it's a Death Star). A B-List Space Marines Chapter crash lands on it in a 'no doubt about it' suicide mission to destroy it (also an interesting idea but the decision by the Chapter Master to do so seems a little rushed and could have been gone into in a little more detail). All this happens within the first 20 pages of the story. What separates it from the rest of the pack is the "who's corpse are they retrieving these memories from" narrative device and the unknown until the last few pages, reason behind this particular SM Chapters need to save the next planet in the Death Stars trajectory.

Interesting characters. The backstory for the Chapter is that their aspirants are chosen from a single home-world that has a seemingly Middle Eastern/Asian inspired Royalty/Caste system (think Dune) that plays heavily into how they act and react to each other (even though they are sworn to disavow all aspects of their former lives during the SM conversion.) The Necrons are a combination of Pre and Post Matt Ward fluff tinkering. They are mostly mindless killing machines save for the leaders that have maintained their Necrontyr personalities and actually bark insults and taunts at their enemies, this works a lot better that you would think it would.

The only problem is the usual 40K "Deus ex Machina" (or in this case 'Deus ex C'Tan") ending that quickly ties things up too neatly yet leaves the door open for another conflict with the very thing they released to save themselves. This worked wonderfully (and tragically) in Eisenhorn, but the the idea has been beaten to death by subsequent Black Library 40k novels.

worth it!

Great book. the Astral Knights make a desperate assault on a necron "Death Star" like world called the world engine by crashing a ship with their whole chapter on to its surface.

I have always enjoyed seeing the space marines fighting the necrons as it is one of the few races in the 41 millennium that seem to out match them particularly in this one where they don't even now who the necrons are or anything about them before they got to the surface. they did not even know if they would survive the crash to the surface or if sending their whole chapter to certain death will even do any good.

the one problem I have with this story is there was not much build up to the coming up with the plan to crash the ship. just a few pages in and they are making their death run at the world engine. this gets explained more latter in the book but missing that build up was still a disappointment to me.

also there are breaks from the main story to read notes from an Inquisitorial agent who is digging out the memories of a of the space marine recovered from the battle with the world engine. which are weird but get very intriguing as the book goes on.

This book provides a range of useful techniques for those involved in organising special events, and is also useful for students. The book is in two sections, the first section is about the events business, the second, larger section, is about how to organise events.
The book has many features to help the reader prepare their own event, with useful forms for the beginner, lots of charts and diagrams, and a range of case studies from many countries.
The book contains helpful suggestions from real life events, especially from festivals, carnivals and tourism events. The book is easy to read, with clear language. The case studies give web addresses so the reader can look for more information on the net related to them.
The most useful thing about the book is that it is a good book for organisers and managers to have on their shelf.

About the Author

Daniel Traster, CCC, CCE, CCP, worked as the Dean of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management at Stratford University and as the Academic Director of Culinary Arts at the Art Institute of Washington. Prior to his 8 years in culinary education, Traster worked for over a decade in various culinary operations, including the Four Seasons Hotel in Philadelphia, and Occasions Caterers, Provence Restaurant, and as a personal chef - all in Washington, DC. Daniel Traster has earned a B.A in English and Theater from Yale University, an A.O.S. in Culinary Arts from the Culinary Institute of America, and a M.S. in Adult Learning and Human Resource Development from Virginia Tech. He continues to consult while working as the culinary director for the Metropolitan Cooking and Entertaining Show. In addition to Welcome to Culinary School: A Culinary Student Survival Guide, Daniel Traster has authored Foundations of Cost Control and Foundations of Menu Planning.
