Extremely pragmatic but nonetheless insightful!

This book is quite refreshing when compared to most acting books. Usually you get books that talk very theoretically: "Be the character, when given the script, look for the shifts in tone, mark the changes in emotions, become one". It works for some but not all. The issue with these types of acting books is that they force the actor to remain in their head. We've all done it. Every actor who is serious about their craft has been down this road, many remain on this road. You know the one I'm talking about. The "Do your homework but forget about it when you go up on stage" type of training. The "I need you to be spontaneous but still remain within the structure of the script and play". The "Bring yourself to the character...but more like the character!".

It's nauseating. You're told to memorize and remember each beat but then are criticized for being to mechanical and "not in the moment". See how these two thoughts don't really mesh well? You're telling me to do mental math but then chastise me for thinking too hard.

Enter this book! The Method! In a nutshell, this book teaches you to use your life as a means to be believable on stage or on camera. While this book doesn't discuss on camera acting, the principles are no less effective. From exercises that free you of tension to exercises that removes you from your ego, this book is incredibly practical. There are no theories in this book. No "if you want to see this in action, come to my class!" type of lessons. It's "Do exercise A to reduce or relieve stress. Then use exercise B to ground yourself. Then use exercise C to assimilate your emotions into that of your character". It's very effective and it's nowhere near as challenging as many professional method actors make it seem. You don't need to go homeless to act dejected and hopeless. I enjoyed this book and will use these exercises in my scenes to come!

Brilliant, introductory volume of Eric Morris' legendary insights on acting. A fundamentally sound and effective technique to creating truthful, grounded, affective, still and full performances. He is truly one of the greats and still practices what he preaches to this day. If you are seriously committed to looking for a bonafide, practical and practicable 'method' to study, read this book first and if this approach speaks to your soul, go study with Eric while he still teaches in Los Angeles, or with his protege in NYC, Anthony Vincent Bova (one of the best instructors on the East Coast). You will not be disappointed. In fact, you will likely come away a changed person....and in the process, an artist to be reckoned with. Break a leg.

I Love This Book!

I was at a conference where James Durham was one of the speakers. He talked about this book, but he was all sold out. I love this book because he tells you how to get there. Reading about his encounters with the Lord and how he believes that we can have the same encounters. I have been using this book as a devotional. Reading daily and praying over what he shares. I'm believing for GOD encounters as well. If your a christian and you want a intimate relationship with The Lord, take this book, pray and believe for your heavenly experiences. This is a hands on book of how to get into that heavenly realm. This book is AWESOME!!!! It's changing my life!

100 Days in Heaven

This is a very thought provoking book. It is full of insights gained from the authors visions and personal interactions in the heavenly realm. The author then follows up his revelations using scripture and his own understanding of what the Lord is speaking. It is well worth the read but won't be one that is read cover to cover without stopping. It should be read a few pages at a time with the reader taking time for reflection and meditation between readings.

About the Author

Bang-Sup Song, Ph.D., received a B.S. from Seoul National University, Korea, in 1973, an M.S. from Korea Advanced Institute of Science in 1975, and a Ph.D. from the University of California–Berkeley in 1983. From 1975 to 1978, he was a member of the research staff at the Agency for Defense Development, Korea. From 1983 to 1986, he was a member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey, and was also a visiting faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Rutgers University, New Jersey. From 1986 to 1999, Dr. Song was a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Coordinated Science Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana. In 1999, Dr. Song joined the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, San Diego, where he is endowed with the position of Charles Lee Powell Chair Professor in Wireless Communication.

Dr. Song received a Distinguished Technical Staff Award from AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1986, a Career Development Professor Award from Analog Devices in 1987, and a Xerox Senior Faculty Research Award from the University of Illinois in 1995. His Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) activities have been in the capacities of an associate editor and a program committee member for the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, International Solid-State Circuits Conference, and International Symposium on Circuits and Systems. Dr. Song is an IEEE fellow.

Ok textbook need some improvements

This is a good textbook for grad level students or those who begin to learn cmos design. It teaches you the dasic concept of each system but not in detail or driving equations so this is not a design guide or cookbook.

The thing I don't like is how Song does not detail his figures well. Most of the time I can't figure out what those figures are trying to tell, and all he does in the text is "blah blah blah...as shown in Fig.1.1" but he doesn't explain how to read the figure1.1 .
For example, if there were two sinewaves in the figure which he would said those were the outputs. However they would not be documented in which is what. There would be also some lines, curves, axis here and there without explaination and notations and you have to figure out your own that two waves were supposed to be an ideal ouput and one is the none ideal case.(this is just to illustrate the idea, not an real example in the book)

Other than that, Song expect you to have lots of background knowledge too because when he explains one phenomena he often includes other concepts which may not be addressed in his entire book. For example, he tells you "we do this X becuase Y" or "we do X so we get Y" and why is Y related to X is never explained.

So I feel like I need to do much more research on the topic when I read his book, not sure if this is a good thing in term of writing a book.
If he could combined Razavi's level of explaination with the content this would be a great book.

This book is very good review of many well known circuit and architectures in analog and digital circuit. But this book do not talk about how to design circuit without good software such as Cadence design system or Agilent EE Soft. Especially how to design accurate dc operating point of submicron CMOS process with Level1 , Level 2 or Level3 transisstor model

This would be a very useful book if you already have a general understanding of ...

When I am reading this, I have to read between the lines, and it sometimes take quite long for me to just understand a sentence. This would be a very useful book if you already have a general understanding of the topic (i.e., you took all the coursework and/or read Razavi books). This book will provide you with many intuitions, but you will have hard time understanding the book if you lack the background knowledge in basic circuit theory.

Oh, and I almost gave it a 4-star because the price of the book is ridiculously high... but then it's a well written book. You may find some sentences that are not very well written, but Prof. Song is not a native English speaker. Still, he knows his circuits, and you'll learn a lot from him.

Peter Dayan and L.F. Abbott have crafted an excellent introduction to the various methods of modeling nervous system function. The chapters dealing with neural coding and information theory are particularly welcome because these are new areas that are not well represented in existing texts.

Good overview

This book is a detailed overview of the computational modeling of nervous systems from the molecular and cellular level and from the standpoint of human psychophysics and psychology. They divide their conception of modeling into descriptive, mechanistic, and interpretive models. My sole interest was in Part 3, which covers the mathematical modeling of adaptation and learning, so my review will be confined to these chapters. The virtue of this book, and others like it, is the insistence on empirical validation of the models, and not their justification by "thought experiments" and arm-chair reasoning, as is typically done in philosophy.
Part 3 begins with a discussion of synaptic plasticity and to what degree it explains learning and memory. The goal here is to develop mathematical models to understand how experience and training modify the neuronal synapses and how these changes effect the neuronal patterns and the eventual behavior. The Hebb model of neuronal firing is ubiquitous in this area of research, and the authors discuss it as a rule that synapses change in proportion to the correlation of the activities of pre- and postsynaptic neurons. Experimental data is immediately given that illustrates long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). The authors concentrate mostly on models based on unsupervised learning in this chapter. The rules for synaptic modification are given as differential equations and describe the rate of change of the synaptic weights with respect to the pre- and postsynaptic activity. The covariance and BCM rules are discussed, the first separately requiring postsynaptic and presynaptic activity, the second requiring both simultaneously. The authors consider ocular dominance in the context of unsupervised learning and study the effect of plasticity on multiple neurons. The last section of the chapter covers supervised learning, in which a set of inputs and the desired outputs are imposed during training.
In the next chapter, the authors consider the area of reinforcement learning, beginning with a discussion of the mathematical models for classical conditioning, and introducing the temporal difference learning algorithm. The authors discuss the Rescorla-Wagner rule , which is a trial-by-trial learning rule for the weight adjustments, in terms of the reward, the prediction, and the learning rate. They then discuss more realistic policies such as static action choice, where the reward/punishment immediately follows the action taken, and sequential action choice, where rewards may be delayed. The authors discuss foraging behavior of bees as an example of static action choice, reducing it to a stochastic two-armed bandit problem. The maze task for rats is discussed as an example of sequential action choice, and the authors reduce it to the "actor-critic algorithm." A generalized reinforcement learning algorithm is then discussed, with the rat water maze problem given as an example.
Chapter 10 is an overview of what the authors call "representational learning", which, as they explain, is a study of neural representations from a computational point of view. The goal is to begin with sensory input and find out how representations are generated on the basis of these inputs. That such representations are necessary is based on for example the consideration of the visual system, since, argue the authors, what is presented at the retina is too crude for an accurate representation of the visual world. The main strategy in the chapter is to begin with a deterministic or probabilistic input and construct a recognition algorithm that gives an estimate of the input. The algorithms constructed are all based on unsupervised learning, and hence the existence and nature of the causes must be computed using heuristics and the statistics of the input data. These two requirements are met via the construction of first a generative model and then a recognition model in the chapter. The familiar 'expectation maximization' is discussed as a method of optimization between real and synthetic data in generative models. A detailed overview of expectation maximization is given in the context of 'density estimation'. The authors then move on to discuss causal models for density estimation, such as Gaussian mixtures, the K-means algorithm, factor analysis, and principal components analysis. They then discuss sparse coding, as a technique to deal with the fact that the cortical activity is not Gaussian. They illustrate an experimental sample, showing the activity follows an exponential distribution in a neuron in the inferotemporal area of the macaque brain. The reader will recognize 'sparse' probability distributions as being 'heavy-tailed', i.e. having values close to zero usually, but ones far from zero sometimes. The authors emphasize the difficulties in the computation of the recognition distribution explicitly. The Olshausen/Field model is used to give a deterministic approximate recognition model for this purpose. The authors then give a fairly detailed overview of a two-layer, nonlinear 'Helmholtz machine' with binary inputs. They illustrate how to obtain the expectation maximization in terms of the Kullback-Leibler divergence. The learning in this model takes place via stochastic sampling and occurs in two phases, the so-called "wake and sleep" algorithm. The last section of the chapter gives a general discussion of how recent interest in coding, transmitting, and decoding images has led to much more research into representational learning algorithms. They discuss multi-resolution decomposition and its relationship to the coding algorithms available.

Good book for computational neuroscience

I am a mathematician and economist interested in how human brain works. To me, (so far) this is the best book using equations to describe the overall picture of brain functions. Even though it might not touch in-depth research topics, I am sure it gives anyone interested in neuroscience very solid foundations on which more advance topics are built. (It actually invites me to more in-depth research topics, such as reinforcement learning, reward-punishment system, etc.)

If math is your familiar language (says, system of differential equations and Bayesian probability), and you are interested to know, in technical details, how the brain functions, this book is for you. Then, I think, you can go into research topics of your interests after finishing reading this book.

New Title: Theoretical Neuroscience - Firing Rate Models

While I would like to say that this book is all encompassing, it only briefly touches upon one of the very important camps of computational neuroscience - the spiking models. Be warned that you will be viewing theoretical neuroscience through one lens targeted mainly at firing rates. A brief distinction: spiking models include the dynamic changes of the individual spikes of neurons into neural models, and tend to focus on the contribution of the temporal and electrical components of the neuronal action potentials as they move down the axons and interact with other neurons. Firing rate models condense this spiking behavior into a probability distribution governing the rate at which the neuron fires (think Hertz). This is a fantastically written book, but I would suggest izhikevich's book as a companion.
