It focuses on Miss Anne, the moral center of the community, and on her recollection, years later, of the romance between town spinster Sophie and Grover Cleveland Oto, the California-born 50-year-old everyone thinks of as Miss Anne's "Chinese" gardener. Both Sophie and Oto harbor secrets. Sophie's is that the man she loved didn't return from WWI; Oto's is that happenstance and a Greyhound bus driver left him in Salty Creek, starved and in disgrace, far from his Japanese-American family. For two years the two are preternaturally aware of each other, but constrained from anything but brief, polite conversation. Each is a painter, and artistic imagination sustains both. In time, they fall into the habit of meeting at the riverbank on Sunday mornings with brushes and paper to work in companionable silence while the other townsfolk sing hymns at church. The requisite town snoop and the presence of Sophie and Anne's household help ensures that Oto and Sophie keep a formal distance, but as the author's lyrical flights intensify, so does the couple's suppressed passion. Then the war unleashes cruelty disguised as patriotism and forces Oto into hiding. As in her earlier novel Praise Jerusalem!, Trobaugh depicts in aching detail the isolation that racism occasions, and once again suggests the small but heartwarming triumphs made possible by human dignity and courage.

It's 1941, and small-town spinster Sophie has fallen in love with a completely inappropriate fellow. Mr. Oto, a Japanese American gardener, years older, has captured her heart. The growth of their relationship is a gradual, tentative, even poetic event. However, the bombing of Pearl Harbor soon complicates this friendship. The townspeople of Sophie's Georgia burg are suspicious of outsiders and of any unconventional behavior. After the bombing, Mr. Oto must go into hiding while his landlady, Miss Anne, and Sophie both bravely conspire to hide and feed him. The end of the story brings the sudden disappearance of both Sophie and Mr. Oto, and it's up to readers to decide what this means for the protagonists. Trobaugh (Resting in the Bosom of the Lamb) has written another Southern novel featuring a beautiful and unusual love story. Recommended for all public libraries. Carol J. Trobaugh's third novel follows her well-received earlier ones, Resting in the Bosom of the Lamb (1999) and Praise Jerusalem! (1997). Readers unfamiliar with the author will certainly experience the thrill of discovery, for Trobaugh's story of love lost and found in a small Georgia town sparkles with wonderful moments and expertly created characters. Mr. Oto, a gardener, and Sophie, a spinster who has spent her youthful years taking care of relatives, meet in the local hardware store, and a genuine affection blossoms between the two. The time is 1939, and war brings fear to the town and changes to the growing romance between the hesitant Sophie and the quiet Mr. Oto. Trobaugh's story succeeds not simply because of its two main characters but also for believability of all the individuals who inhabit the town, and readers who have not read her two previous novels are bound to want to rectify that situation. Wonderful - The Help Meets Nicholas Sparks

This story is a wonderful, lovely tale. I instantly liked Sophie, Miss Anne, Mr. Oto and was drawn into their world. Miss Ruth is portrayed in a perfectly nasty way. Well done. Queen Sally was fun and I only wish she had a bigger part in the book.

If you are a fan of Nicholas Sparks and his soft, sometimes gushy, love stories, I suggest you try Sophie and the Rising Sun. While Mr. Sparks can leave us with a face full of tears, I was left with a smile after reading this book.

A couple of sections seemed rater contrived (how Mr. Oto arrive in Salty Creek and an incident involving an ankle injury), but I was able to look past that and just go with the flow of the story. Although the writing of this book doesn't reach the depth of The Help, I enjoyed the similarities this book had with that story.

This would make a fantastic movie for Lifetime or the Hallmark Channel. Producers searching for new material - stop here!

A small Southern town on the eve of Pearl Harbor.

Sophie and the Rising Sun by Augusta Trobaugh is an excellent book which relates the effects of a strangers entrance into a Southern community. The year is 1939 when Mr. Oto, a Japanese man wanders into the town of Salty Creek Georgia. Arriving by bus, Mr. Oto is quite ill and is tended to by the local doctor. After he recovers Miss Anne, a kindly widow hires him as a gardener and offers him a place to live. As Mr. Oto he works hard and adjusts to his new life, he also tries to put behind him the shame and circumstances that led him to Salty Creek. One day while working, Mr. Oto sees a lovely woman walking by. In due time he learns that this is Miss Sophie, a Southern spinster lady who paints by the river. Following her one morning, Mr. Oto finds the courage to talk to her and these two unlikely people begin a relationship that will be severely tested and threatened when Pearl Harbor is attacked. Although most of the townspeople think Mr. Oto is Chinese, Miss Sophie knows the truth. As feelings of prejudice and tension towards anybody who looks foreign heats up in Salty Creek, Miss Sophie and Mr. Oto must made a decision that will forever change their lives.
This book, which speaks volumes about isolation and ostracism, is somewhat reminiscent of When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka and Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson, both excellent novels. A well written, well presented novel, Miss Sophie and the Rising Sun will have reader finding themselves pausing to consider the plight of many who are born in this country but have ties to a foreign land. I do recommend this book and look forward to reading more by Augusta Trobuagh

engaging historical thriller

Miss Anne recalls what happened to Miss Sophie Willis over two decades ago back in 1939 in Salty Creek, Georgia although she admits she does not know how it ended only how it got to that point. Allegedly Miss Sophie's true love died during WWI combat. After some supposed grief, Sophie apparently accepted her life as being a dry loneliness taking care of her mom and two aunts.

However, Miss Sophie and Miss Anne's fiftyish Japanese-American gardener Mr. Grover Cleveland Oto become friends as they enjoy spending Sunday morning painting in silence. As the pair falls in love, Pearl Harbor places the California born Mr. Oto in peril from local retaliation. Miss Anne and Miss Sophie hide Mr. Oto from the terror of the angry Salty Creek vigilantes.

This is an engaging historical thriller that focuses on the impact of war on people and relationships even thousands of miles from the front. The story line is character driven by the three above, Miss Sophie's deceased family, and several other key players like Big Sally, Miss Ruth and Eulalie as they bring a sense of time and place to the strong WWII drama told by Miss Anne in the early 1960s.

About the Author
Marko Kloos is a novelist, freelance writer, and unpaid manservant to two small children. He is a graduate of the Viable Paradise SF/F Writers' Workshop.

Marko writes primarily science fiction and fantasy because he is a huge nerd and has been getting his genre fix at the library ever since he was old enough for his first library card. In the past, he has been a soldier, a bookseller, a freight dock worker, a tech support drone, and a corporate IT administrator.

A former native of Germany, Marko lives in New Hampshire with his wife and two children. Their compound, Castle Frostbite, is patrolled by a roving pack of dachshunds.

Echos of Heinlein and Huxley

This book is extremely readable and engaging. I finished it quickly and felt disappointed that it ended and I am hoping for this to grow into a series. The book is a classic "Hero's Journey" storyline, and I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed "Starship Troopers" and noted a lot of the differences. Instead of Heinlein's "Citizen/Civilian" political dynamic that led to an almost "utopia" found in the classic "Starship Troopers" we find the results of generational welfare taken to the logical conclusion as the base setting for "Terms of Enlistment." The grit, dirt, and ugliness of the socialist dole life remind me of Huxley's "Brave New World" in dealing with the underclass. But the book is not about economics or politics, those settings are only there to explain the rational of characters which the setting does admirably.

The mercenary attitude of the protagonist is refreshing, not gritty or jaded but honestly working hard to scramble up out of poverty. The action sequences are well written and manage to convey crappy orders that grunts execute because that is just how the system works.

Out the "self-publish" league
By no so-called
Fine SF novel. Money well spent. Good entertainment, engrossing and real. Better than second-tier work from folks like Silverberg or whoever. Solid, visual, no-fat writing. Great technical skill at describing action, and he makes the most of his strengths. Strictly mature professional, no self-indulgence or slack, no major false moves, quite a trick for a guy with no editor. I didn't notice the prose at all, which is the highest praise there is for guys whose names don't end in Vance or Plunkett. Three or four minor "continuity errors", but nothing story-critical. I was uncomfortable with how comfortable the characters were inflicting casualties on massively outgunned opponents, but combat is ugly stuff by nature and that's a matter of taste. And they get chewed up real good soon enough (loose end there, though). It's a bit episodic, like any military fiction -- the characters have to go where they're told, though a clever enough plotter could make that work to his advantage, I'm sure. High concept: SPACE MARINES SEINFELD!!!!!

It doesn't rise to the first rank: It doesn't rattle your head -- though chapter thirteen starts off pretty intense. Characterization isn't deep. Not a whole lot of detailed interior life or conflict, or anyway not much that stuck in my head. More than the Lensman novels, though! But none of Smith's vast lunatic sweep and grandeur, either. Tight, focused, practical, concrete. With that kind of thing, I'd like a little (I said little) more interior agony b.s. in the mix, or some weirder stuff that'd grab you by the nuts more, but if the author just gives us more of the same next time out, I'll happily buy that and gobble it up. He is who he is. Maybe blow up some bigger stuff. The author is very good at describing stuff blowing up and bad things happening without sounding amateurish or perfunctory. I'd like to see him wreck the s#� t out of some Iain-Banks-scale toys.

So that's the deal. Good old fashioned gripping readable military adventure SF, without any Dicksonian mystical twaddle. I'll re-up (HURR HURRR HURRRRR) for the sequel.

It's horrifying this doesn't have a publisher. It's a quality professional SF novel, better than 95% (UPDATE: 99%) of the field these days.

Outstanding first novel!

Marko Kloos has written an outstanding first novel. He paints a convincing world view, drawing the reader into his creation and making us feel part of the narrative. He intersperses action with interesting perspectives on how society and the human race may evolve, and gives a gritty realism to his vision of the future. His own military service is evident in his descriptions of service life, training, etc.

There are only two moderately weak points - and I say 'moderately' with emphasis. It's hard to go into detail without giving anything away as a 'spoiler', but briefly, his account of a relationship between an officer and an enlisted person, while fictionally OK, wouldn't translate to reality in any military service of which I'm aware - the whole 'chain of command' thing. However, if one 'suspends disbelief' in that context, it works just fine. Secondly, the ending doesn't round off the story so much as leave it wide open for a sequel - preferably more than one sequel! I'll buy them, and read them with pleasure.

Good coverage overall of the CAPE required material. A few errors are present and the layout is very disappointing for a Communication Studies book, but I suppose publication cost was a factor.

About the Author
Over the last forty-odd years, ANGELA YVONNE DAVIS has been active in numerous organizations challenging prison-related repression. Born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1944, Davis studied at Brandeis University, the Sorbonne, and with Herbert Marcuse at the Goethe Institute. Her advocacy on behalf of political prisoners, and her alleged connection to the Marin County courthouse incident, led to three capital charges, sixteen months in jail awaiting trial, and a highly publicized acquittal in 1972. In 1998, Davis was one of the twenty-five organizers of the historic Berkeley, California conference “Critical Resistance: Beyond the Prison Industrial Complex.” She is the author of many books, including Are Prisons Obsolete? and The Meaning of Freedom. She currently teaches in the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Davis is a Revelation

Angela Y. Davis is stunningly clear and straightforward in this set of interviews. The book reads much like a conversation, and Davis has a gift for letting the reader cut through the standard scholarly BS to join her in the struggle for interconnected freedom. Her insights are extraordinary. You wouldn't normally analyze the prison system as an evolved form of slavery and Jim Crow. Davis even goes as far as to find strong connections in the sexualized torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib to similar sexualized lynchings of blacks. This book has opened my eyes to many things, including how sexual abuse is legalized in state penal systems, which then feeds into similar abuse in federal prisons and helps create a reciprocal relationship of the two facilitating each other's inhumane practices. She has a remarkable insight for connecting gender and sexual equality, racial equality, and economic equality together to solidify the fact that change must be unified across all levels. The criminal justice and penal institutions must be removed and replaced with something that is actually effective and moral. "Abolition democracy" is the name of this battle.

I enjoy how Davis's insights are reflected in another popular book recently released, "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander. Both books are must-reads, complete eye-openers. My suggestion: study both, and look at the world in new ways.

This interview should constitute required reading for anyone interested, at least somewhat, in human rights. She is sharp, thoughtful and experienced. Worth the short time it takes to read.

Incomplete at best

This is absolute junk! The "complete homeschool bundle" doesn't come with the books and poems necessary to teach each lesson. The whole set is written for a classroom setting and then they removed the books and called it "homeschool ready" when really you are left less prepared to teach. Truly you would be better off buying those cheap Hooked On books you can buy at Walmart and Sam's club.

Great resource!

Words their way is a great resource to help students understand word families, see connections between words, and start to internalize how words are created and what sounds letters make. I wouldn't use this as a curriculum by itself, but it is a great supplemental resource for any spelling/vocabulary/phonics work in the classroom or at home.
