Snow Country, probably the most famous of Yasunari Kawabata's classical Japanese novels, is the story of a love affair doomed from the very start.
Set on the snowy, mountainous slopes of Western Japan, Snow Country tells the story of Komako, a hot springs geisha and Shimamura, a wealthy Tokyo dilettante who works as an expert on occidental ballet. The focus of the novel is on three visits to Komako from Shimamura and their changing relationship as well as Yoko, a maid at the inn where Shimamura chooses to stay while in the snow country. Each of these three characters is searching for love, yet finds himself (or herself) incapable of fully experiencing it.
Throughout Snow Country, Kawabata utilizes the changing of the seasons as a metaphor for the changing relationship between Komako and Shimamura. Meeting in the spring, Shimamura sees Komako as an "amateur," a mere girl, and feels the need to protect her, much as one would protect a growing seedling. The relationship thus begins in genuine friendship and under the protection of Shimamura, Komako grows and matures.
Shimamura's second visit takes place in the fall and Komako, who has matured into a woman, finds that her relationship with Shimamura has changed; she no longer views him as her protector and finds that the friendship the two once shared has now become a struggling romance. Komako, who emotionally, has moved beyond the superficial Shimamura, now views him with a mixture of passion and contempt.
Winter brings yet another change to this enigmatic relationship as Komako and Shimamura begin to argue and grow further and further apart. Shimamura finds himself attracted to Yoko, but it is an attraction that can only end in tragedy for all concerned. Although the ending of the novel may be confusing for some, it does effectively sever any ties that Komako and Shimamura may have had.
Although lyrically beautiful, the novel is almost painful to read as the characters struggle to keep their dignity intact in the face of their disintegrating relationship. Kawabata's writing is gorgeous and poetic and the book embodies the juxtaposition of his signature themes of beauty and sorrow. The narrative is minimal, as it should be, emphasizing the three characters' inability to love and live life to the fullest.
Kawabata uses subtle, yet rich, imagery instead of a dense and complex narrative. "...insects smaller than moths gathered on the thick white powder of her neck. Some of them died there as Shimamura watched." Kawabata wisely gives us only the beautiful essentials, existing largely in the conversations of the characters. The haiku-like images that make up their surroundings also lends insight into their character. This is an novel of nuance and atmosphere, of bare essentials and hidden meaning, of spaces and silences and hanging threads.
Delineating the effects of desire on a man and loneliness on a woman, Snow Country is ultimately a book about love and the loss of love. Although bare and skeletal in some respects, it is still a classical story that burns with the fire of passion and then grows as cold as the snowy climate in which it is set.

Haiku in prose

Unless you are familiar with Japanese culture and language, you will find Snow Country different from most any novel you may have read. Read superficially the novel appears to follow a simple plot and structure. Yet, its intensity and beauty lies in the lyrical imagery of landscape and evocation of the protagonists' complex psyche and their relationships. The novel can be compared to a Japanese brushstroke painting, economic and suggestive, where the observant eye is able to complete the picture or the story. To fully appreciate Kawabata's prose in English, newcomers are well advised to empty their minds of other, mainly western, literary experiences and expectations and open up to a different world. Snow Country has to be read at a very slow pace. Every word has importance, with sometimes more than one meaning. With these preparations and attitude of mind, Snow Country is an enriching experience that will linger on long after reading it.

Kawabata tells the story of Shimamura, a wealthy man of leisure who's visiting a hot springs mountain resort to meet the local geisha, Komako. He comes for distraction and out of boredom with his real life in Tokyo. Komako is a reluctant geisha, but has resigned herself to her role, while hoping for some other life. The contrast between what they are and what they would like to be is played out in their interactions. Shimamura is drawn to the unreal or the unlikely or impossible. He wants to remain "just friends" with Komako. Her chatty and highly emotional outbursts leave him somewhat amused and bored, yet he misses her when away from her. She does not behave like a real mountain geisha. His room is like a refuge from that life, a place where she can literally let her hair down. Shimamura's attraction for the other young girl, Yoko, a friend and rival to Komako, is as contradictory. In her shyness and reserve she is desirable. She appears to him beautiful and pure, a delicate reflection in the window against the mountain landscape.

Nature and landscape are of great importance to Kawabata and articulated through Shimamura. Nature's beauty is felt more intensely by him than anything else. When he and Komako find themselves outdoors, they have nothing to say to each other. Yet even nature provokes contradictory emotions in Shimamura. "...he looked upon mountain climbing as almost a model of wasted effort. For that very reason it pulled at him with the attraction of the unreal."
Kawabata was one of Japan's most famous writers. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1968. His Nobel Lecture elucidates his deep affinity to and understanding of classical haiku poetry. Haiku represents a fundamental element of Japanese culture then and now. Snow Country has been described as haiku in prose. Kawabata uses a shorthand style for his descriptions, evoking simultaneously multiple senses, like colour and temperature, stillness and motion, attraction and rejection. Nature is all encompassing with people one component of the wider picture.

The novel is rich in symbolism and references to Japanese traditions and mythology. However, some are easier to identify than others. While accepting that the English language reader will miss some of the deeper meanings and connotations, Snow Country is a novel that opens a fascinating world and deservedly has an enviable place in international literature. It is difficult to comment on the quality of Seidensticker's translation. Still, as others have expressed, one wonders whether the translation could have contributed more to the novel's appreciation by the reader. 4.5 stars [Friederike Knabe]

What are you really thinking, I wonder?

Kawabata is one of Japan's most respected authors, and "Snow Country" is his masterpiece. However, that does not mean that this is a book for everyone, or that everyone will necessarily understand or enjoy the novel. In fact, I got my copy as a cast-off from a friend who said it was incredibly boring and he didn't want to keep it.
It is a demanding read, one that expects the reader to be able to catch the substance of the unsaid, the implied. Almost nothing is spoon-fed. There is no action, no crisis, nothing that most literary traditions has lead readers to expect from a novel. It demands patience, even though it is a slender volume.
Personally, I found it captivating, and intensely deep and moving. Having read other Kawabata, I was prepared for the subtlety of style and the sparseness of language and story that is his trademark. He is the inheritor of the Haiku, which implies with as few words as necessary. The emotional depth of the novel is incredibly deep, much deeper than many novels I have read who express with much more fanciful language. The Geisha and the Dilettante, the one who affects love but cannot know true love, and the one who gives herself to love even though she knows it cannot be. It is a passionless affair, yet intense. Like the snow country itself, the landscape of their hearts is sparse, yet life lies under the surface covering of insulation.
I did find the translation annoying and disappointing, and I was surprised to find such a lackluster translation on one of Japan's premier novels. The constant use of quotations for "mountain trousers," for instance, instead of just naming it once and using the Japanese term. I am sure that a better translation could capture the novel even better, and perhaps transport it for a new audience.
All in all, one of the best Japanese novels that I have read. Simply incredible, and worth the time. But remember your patience.

The Broken Compass puts this question to the test in the most thorough scientific investigation to date of how parents across socioeconomic and ethnic groups contribute to the academic performance of K-12 children. The study's surprising discovery is that no clear connection exists between parental involvement and improved student performance.

Keith Robinson and Angel Harris assessed over sixty measures of parental participation, at home and in school. Some of the associations they found between socioeconomic status and educational involvement were consistent with past studies. Yet other results ran contrary to previous research and popular perceptions. It is not the case that Hispanic and African American parents are less concerned with education than other ethnic groups--or that "tiger parenting" among Asian Americans gets the desired results. In fact, many low-income parents across a wide spectrum want to be involved in their children's school lives, but they often receive little support from the school system. And for immigrant families, language barriers only worsen the problem.

While Robinson and Harris do not wish to discourage parents' interest, they believe that the time has come to seriously reconsider whether greater parental involvement can make much of a dent in the basic problems facing their children's education today. This provocative study challenges some of our most cherished beliefs about the role of family in educational success.

In the largest-ever study of how parental involvement affects academic achievement, Keith Robinson, a sociology professor at the University of Texas at Austin, and Angel L. Harris, a sociology professor at Duke, mostly found that it doesn’t. The researchers combed through nearly three decades’ worth of longitudinal surveys of American parents and tracked 63 different measures of parental participation in kids’ academic lives, from helping them with homework, to talking with them about college plans, to volunteering at their schools. In an attempt to show whether the kids of more-involved parents improved over time, the researchers indexed these measures to children’s academic performance, including test scores in reading and math. What they found surprised them. Most measurable forms of parental involvement seem to yield few academic dividends for kids, or even to backfire--regardless of a parent’s race, class, or level of education…They did find a handful of habits that make a difference, such as reading aloud to young kids (fewer than half of whom are read to daily) and talking with teenagers about college plans. But these interventions don’t take place at school or in the presence of teachers, where policy makers exert the most influence--they take place at home. (Dana Goldstein The Atlantic 2014-04-01)

An insightful piece of scholarly work that warrants more research

Having read the two bad reviews here on Amazon, and more critiques of this kind in other news outlets, I cannot help suspecting that authors of these reviews have NOT actually read the book. If they had done so, they would have recognized that in the book, Robinson and Harris never overstep what the data says and make audacious claims like "parenting is harmful for children." A piece of real scholarly work, this book does NOT intend to examine effects of family engagement on kids' development in general, but instead, its sole purpose is to look into whether behaviors of parental involvement with SPECIFIC GOALS to increase kids' academic performance really work. Using a simple but rigorous quantitative method (OLS) to analyze several large datasets, Robinson and Harris do not find prevalent positive association between various behaviors of parental involvement with SPECIFIC GOALS to increase kids' academic performance and kids' academic performance measured by standard test scores and GPA, and they conclude that these specific behaviors (NOT parental engagement in general) are ineffective the way they are currently implemented.

Actually read the book!

It appears that those who positively reviewed this book are those folks who've actually read it and not just the NY Times opinion piece. This book is really good and these authors are not the only ones making these arguments--their literature review and framework are very well researched. Their arguments are actually commonsensical--not all forms of parental involvement are the same across social groups (class, education level, cultural background, etc.) and not all forms of involvement are valued and recognized equally by schools and policymakers (they have a preference for certain behaviors). These authors are challenging the notion of a one-size-fits-all paradigm of parental involvement that rests in the minds of policymakers and educators. This study raises good questions and is a great addition to the literature on parental involvement in schools.

Robinson does a great job of reviewing the actual impact of parent involvement on academic performance. The conclusions are often startling, and gave me a new appreciation and compassion for those with a less academic environment.

About the Author
Shadi Bartsch is chair of the Department of Classics and a professor in the Committees on the History of Culture and on the Ancient Mediterranean World at the University of Chicago. She is also the editor in chief of Classical Philology, coeditor of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Rhetoric, and author of numerous works, including Ideology in Cold Blood and Actors in the Audience. Thomas Bartscherer is a doctoral candidate in the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.

13 Ways of Looking at a Lovebird

An interesting, provocative book. It could have used more illustrations (so much to choose from on this topic!) but the essays are generally of high quality and the responses spice it up (the Lear/Zizek exchange, for example, is a gem). Writing style varies greatly, from the scholarly to the quasi-confessional to poetry and fiction. Any reader is bound to like some pieces more than others, but you can skip around with relative impunity, and the introduction ties it all together pretty nicely. It's fun to watch art and theory battle for dominion in the realm of love. I say the palm goes to art.

There is not one single mention of my groundbreaking work "Cyberpornography and the Lucid Human Palpitations therein. Honestly, as a colleague of Thomas and a dear dear sweet fat-free friend, I was wounded, perhaps n'ot mortally but certainly enough to warrant a bench named after me. My sacrifices in the name of pornography are grand, astounding, sleek - viscous, even, like a train slipping through the night like a thief with a bag full of hamburgers stuffed with gold like hiding knives in carrots. This all too much, the torpor makes it difficult to keep my hands from the pistol displayed oh so conveniently near my crotch. Some call it flagrant, I call it a wise investment! Why keep a laptop upon your longing loins? Do you wish to soil Elysian Fields? Put fences around Arcadia? DEnizens of the Bronx would beg the differ but the differ is on his cigarette break. Seriously, this book helped me possess a sense of disquieting intimacy. What better to steal away your own confidence in the bathroom than to bind it together with dead trees and soliloquize it?"

About the Author

Thomas R. Lindlof is a Professor in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications at the University of Kentucky. He received his B.A. from the University of Florida, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining the University of Kentucky faculty, he served on the faculty at the Pennsylvania State University. His research and graduate teaching are focused on the cultural analysis of mediated communication, media audience theory and research, social uses of communication technology, and interpretive research methods. His research has appeared in numerous scholarly outlets, including Communication Research, the Journal of Communication, the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Journalism Quarterly, Journalism Studies, the Journal of Media and Religion, the Social Science Computer Review, and Communication Yearbook. He has served as the editor of the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, and currently serves on the editorial boards of four journals. He has written or edited five books. His latest book, Hollywood under Siege: Martin Scorsese, the Religious Right, and the Culture Wars, was published by the University Press of Kentucky in 2008.

Bryan C. Taylor, Associate Professor, specializes in interpretive research methods, organizational communication, and cultural studies. His principal research program involves studies of nuclear and (post-) Cold War communication. This research explores ideological articulations of gender, ethnicity, technology, and (ir)rationality in organizational and cultural discourse. He is also interested in cultural studies of identity, technology, gender, organization, and media. His research has been published in Journal of Applied Communication Research, Communication Research, Critical Studies in Mass Communication, Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, Quarterly Journal of Speech, Rhetoric and Public Affairs, Studies in Cultures, Organizations, and Societies, and elsewhere. Current projects include a book about the impact of the Cold War on the speech communication discipline. He received his B.A. (1983) from the University of Massachusetts, his M.A.(1987) and Ph.D. (1991) from the University of Utah. Prior to joining the CU-Boulder faculty in 1995 he served on the faculty at Texas A&M University. He was the 1998 recipient of the Young Investigator Award from the Rhetorical and Communication Theory Division of NCA.

Must Have Book!

If you are a communication student who wants to study qualitative research methods then it's definitely a must read book. One of the very few books that discusses qualitative methods from communication perspective. They use easy to digest language and illustrate everything with stories to make it easier to understand. It's very basic though so it will be suitable for students who take intro class to qualitative methods.

Communication overload

This book was too verbose. As I read the book, I caught myself wanting to tell the author to just get to the point. Most of the book is also very anecdotal, which I thought was overused. Overall, the book presents some interesting topics but I wouldn't suggest it for someone who sought general information on qualitative research methods.

Great book

I needed this for a class at college. The book itself is an essential tool for communication. It sheds light on a lot of different aspects of communication that we don't really notice from a day to day basis. In terms of the book's condition, it was okay. There were highlighted words and definitions from a previous student so I'm not really complaining much there (all the work is kind of done for me). But it would have been cool to include this in the description of the book instead of saying GOOD CONDITION!

Yet, textbooks ignore the scientific proof that contradicts the myth of a spinning and orbiting globe. Christian schools have been hoodwinked into teaching heliocentrism, despite the clear teaching in the bible that the earth is not a sphere and does not move. This book reveals the evil forces behind the heliocentric deception, and why scientists and the Christian churches have gone along with it.

Very persuasive, well researched

Phenomenal book. Having read Zetetic Astronomy immediately prior, I was familiar with some of the arguments. But Hendrie is a little bit more thorough and convincing in his arguments. Furthermore, he has the benefit of high-res photo evidence, which Rowbotham did not have at his disposal. I was pleased to see Hendrie delve into the moon hoax, another subject I've been interested in. I've tried twice to get through Dark Mission by Richard Hoagland and twice have failed. The book is dry and, to me, not very believable. So I was pleased again when Hendrie affirmed a thought I had about Hoagland. Quote: "Bill Kaysing has good reason to believe that Hoagland is a shill working for NASA, who is trying to divert attention away from the fact that NASA never went to the moon." (p. 183) The final half of the book turns toward the pervasive influence of Judaism throughout the world, including science. This was an unexpected twist, but it fits perfectly -- and, again, dovetails nicely with my research into the Holocaust, Zionism, false flags, etc. The book's primary shortcoming is that it does not address the issue of satellites. I have been looking for a comprehensive text or video on this subject, but have not found one yet. So far, I have suggested this book to my dad and a friend, both of whom have said they will read it.

Do Not Miss This Book!

This book is not to be missed. The truths it reveals have long been stolen from the Church and need to be restored. The author has done this simply, honestly, and convincingly. I predict that this book will rival in effect, power and scope the effect that Martin Luther had on the church and world of His day and am so grateful that it was made available to me in our time. Anyone who loves God and His Word will be exceedingly blessed to read this book.

I enjoyed the book

I enjoyed the book. It starts out with a satisfactory explaination and decent evidence to prove that the earth is flat. He quotes from several of the earlier writers that have already done a great job in this regard. The author goes on to present a good picture of the who, what, where & why the heliocentric hoax was perpetrated on the world in first place and this is where the book really starts to take off. He does a great job of connecting the dots for the reader here. Lots of source references and foot notes too. Reading this book is definitely worth your time.

Great Ministry Tool for 21st Century

I bought a copy of this book used a few years back. It was perhaps the best book I ever found in a discount bin.
I work in cross-cultural ministry, mostly with Asian Americans. This book was very helpful to me in the work that I do. It covers most of the races that are currenly in America and covers the strengths and faults that are in each of them. This book also tells what must be done to present the gospel to each of them without changing their ethnic culture. I think this feature of the book is excellent because far too often white America thinks that when minority races get saved, they must adopt "White Values." Not true! Each ethnic group in the world that has Christians celebrate Jesus in a way that is unique to their own culture. When we evangelize other groups outside of our own culture, when should remember this.
I'd call this book a must for all pastors, evangelists, and other Christian leaders of all levels in America.

Needs an update and...

This book needs an update/rewrite including sections on how spiritual leaders can approach specific current issues.

This book is over 20 years old. While the advice given is not outright wrong, the rate of change in Culture and Ethnicity in the United States and the World has rendered this book 70% obsolete. The remaining 30% remains relevant only because it is too broad and unfocused to be contradicted.

Three stars instead of two because twenty years ago I would have given it four or five.

Covering ethnic groups in America, this primer shows church leaders how to value cultural differences. It also highlights trans-cultural biblical principles and probes how various cultures apply or misapply these eternal principles in daily life.
